The police are reporting that for the first week of January, the murder tally was 140 per cent above the figure recorded for the first week of January last year.
However, speaking at a press conference this morning, police commissioner Owen Ellington said law enforcement personnel have now managed to cut the increase in murders from 140 per cent to 17 per cent over the corresponding period last year.
The Commissioner also said the police would continue to impose curfews and other security operations with a view to further reducing murders and shootings.
Commissioner Ellington said the police will be keeping up the pressure on criminals through anti-gang measures.
For the first seven days of January 30 people murdered.
A day after he was sworn in, the national security minister Peter Bunting convened a high-level meeting with the leadership of the Jamaica Defence Force and the Jamaica Constabulary Force to discuss the issue of the spike in murders.
During that meeting, it was decided that the security forces would intensify security operations islandwide.
