Fire the Liars is a national, non partisan campaign demanding accountability and transparency in all deliberations before our federal parliament. We insist on the immediate resignation of Conservative cabinet Ministers: Tony Clement, Bev Oda, Peter MacKay and House Leader Peter Van Loan; for their willful participation in attempts to deceive the Canadian public. We’re alarmed they’ve continued to defend this debauchery by asserting their privilege to lie as a right of free speech, as condoned by Prime Minister Harper.

On January 30th, 2012, concerned citizens from across the country will pay a respectful visit to the local offices of their Conservative Members of Parliament. They will attend to present questions from Fire the Liars in regard to accountability. Counterparts to the local contingents will also visit Parliament Hill to deliver our grievance and inquiry to the institution itself.

Fire the Liars Campaign

Last year was an extraordinary and troubling year in Canada's House of Commons.

Canadians across the nation watched as a number of Conservative ministers lied to the House and to the people of Canada. Over the last nearly six years in government, the Harper administration has normalized the politics of deception through outright lying, half-truths, restrictive incomplete information and misleading statements. As progressives, we have a duty to confront and resist this large scale dishonesty.

Ministers of the Crown, Bev Oda, Tony Clement and Peter MacKay are three politicians who have egregiously betrayed their mandate and engaged in willful attempts to deceive both Parliament and the citizenry.

This behavior has not been witnessed in Canadian Parliamentary history.

A number of Canadians have joined together and launched a citizens initiative which calls on Prime Minister Stephen Harper to immediately fire any minister who has been found to engage in the willful deception of Parliament and thereby the citizens of our country. Firetheliars.ca is a grass-roots initiative that aims to build participation and engagement through community partnerships.

Firetheliars.ca is not directly a project of the labour movement, but I have no hesitation in encouraging union members to get involved in the campaign and share the information. The CAW is in full support of this campaign and I encourage other unions and organizations to get involved and to assist where possible.

Since its election in 2006, the Conservative Government of Stephen Harper has exhibited a disturbing pattern of contempt for the right of Canadians to receive factual and truthful information regarding important matters before our national Parliament.

In December 2010, the Minister for International Co-operation, Bev Oda, was asked a series of questions by a duly constituted committee of Parliament. Documentation arising after the fact has shown the minister clearly and deliberately lied to the committee on at least two occasions, regarding her actions on behalf of government. Deceit of this calibre has never occurred in Canada’s history prior, and for the first time a member was shamefully held in Contempt of Parliament. Her continuance as a Minister of the Crown is a disgrace to Parliament and an affront to the citizenry. We demand her immediate resignation and/or termination.

Also during 2010, the Government of Stephen Harper asked Parliament to provide $83 million to his government for “improvements at Canada’s border crossings”. Almost immediately, $50 million of this amount was redirected to the riding of then Industry Minister Tony Clement; Conservative member for Muskoka and far removed from any border crossing.
In his review of this matter, Canada’s Auditor General Andrew Scheer states, “It is very unusual and troubling,” continuing he “had never seen anything like it in his working career”.
It is clear Minister Clement oversaw tens of millions of tax payer dollars dispersed through his riding, without adequate documentation to verify the criteria, relying solely on his private discretion. The refusal of government to provide the requested documentation is an affront to Parliament, as we cannot account for the processing and qualification of countless public funds. We demand his immediate resignation and/or termination.

In July 2010, Defence Minister Peter McKay utilized a National Defence helicopter to attend a private fishing excursion, at a cost of $153,000 to the tax payer. McKay later stated he was part of a “search and rescue exercise”. However, this explanation has been refuted by the Department of National Defence. McKay has lied directly on a matter of Ministerial comportment and his continuation as a Minister of the Crown is a disgrace to Parliament and an affront to the citizenry. We demand his immediate resignation and/or termination.

Under direction of the Conservative Party, an advertising firm was hired to enter the Montreal riding of Liberal MP, Irwin Cotler. The firm was contracted to telephone constituents and explained Cotler was resigning in an attempt to “destabilize” the riding. This script was entirely fabricated and designed to damage the member by eroding public confidence through the utmost deceit. The Conservative Party has surprisingly and publicly defended the practice of misleading constituents.

House Speaker Andrew Scheer has recently ruled this behaviour is contemptible and “reprehensible”. Those who directed the disinformation campaign must be terminated immediately, to restore ethical procedure in the Harper government.

Retaining Ministers of the Crown who’ve participated in the deliberate deception of our citizenry is an affront to Parliament and thereby every Canadian.

Campaign Outline
Fire the Liars is a group of concerned citizens who’ve come together from across Canada to effect necessary change in our federal government. Our most prominent cabinet ministers have lied to Parliament in their official capacities, resulting in public inquiry and outright contempt. Parliament is essentially the Canadian people and this has never happened before in our history.

In response to reprimand from the Speaker of the House and on behalf of the Harper Government, House Leader Peter Van Loan defiantly responded that lying is a matter of free speech we should honour and protect. He defended the secretive and improper use of tax dollars and personal pandering of Canadian assets as an approved practice of this government. This is not how we expect the elected leaders of our country to behave and we demand ethical transparency at the highest levels. We entrust the management of our country’s revenue and sensitive, personal information to cabinet members and we expect they will not lie about their actions to the very country they represent. We further expect the Prime Minister to intervene and protect us from deceit within. Because this has not been possible, Fire the Liars is bringing these concerns to the forefront of Canadian dialogue.

Fire the Liars is assembling 166 hardcopy kits, to detail the information necessary for participation. Representatives will clearly understand the issues and context of this campaign. The kit will include a standardized message and approach to be used throughout the country. Fire the Liars has provided a website, Firetheliars.ca, to maintain solidarity and a central point of activity.

The website will identify 166 target locations with Conservative MPs representing their constituencies. It includes the background information and articles provided in the kit, a petition where citizens and organizations can sign their support and/or make a commitment, a podcast section about the issues and an area where participants will upload photos and videos.

Each location will be provided with a professionally made, 4ft sign that identifies the Fire the Liars campaign. It includes the ministers’ photographs and our logo with website address.

Each location will be provided with 2 questions, which Fire the Liars representatives will pose to their respective, Conservative MPs. The same 2 questions will be asked of every member.

When the questions have been asked, a clock will begin to countdown the length of time required to receive an answer. These clocks will appear on Firetheliars.ca beside a respective MP, once delegates have submitted the information.

All locations will make this visit on January 30, 2012, to commence with Parliament reconvening. At the same time, 166 Fire the Liars participants will attend Parliament Hill in Ottawa to give visibility to our campaign and pose the same questions at their source, in solidarity with members across the country.

We expect Members of Parliament will be absent from their constituency offices on the day of action, but we ask Fire the Liars satellite delegates to offer the information and schedule a subsequent appointment.

Each of the 166 Fire the Liars locations will be asked to provide a photo of the campaign sign in front of their MP’s constituency office and video of their experience if available. They will be uploaded to Firetheliars.ca, so we can watch and track progress together.

A standard press release will be provided to each location, to offer their local media.

To get involved, please fill out the Local Participant, Ottawa Participant or Site Captain forms available at Firetheliars.ca.

For the Fire the Liars campaign to be successful, we suggest having no more than 5 or 6 delegates at each satellite location. We are happy to help individuals coordinate small groups, or you are welcome to speak with friends and suggest a willing assembly. We only ask that participants are seriously committed to attending on January 30, 2012 and those who sign up are able to guarantee attendance. The day is unchangeable, but time can be negotiated and agreed upon by your team.

Each Fire the Liars team will require a Site Captain. This is the person you will nominate to enter the MP’s office to pose our 2 questions, so as not to create an unruly commotion. These are serious questions that require honest answers and our representatives must behave with professional courtesy. Poor tactics on our part would reflect badly on Fire the Liars everywhere and we are tasked with bringing about ethical behaviour in our government. Please keep respect for our campaign front of mind at all times, including the good reputations of fellow participants.

Site Captains must be identified prior to the day of action. This will allow them to communicate with Fire the Liars headquarters and receive the required materials. Please apply for this position via our online Site Captain application form available at Firetheliars.ca

We are grateful for the support offered by various organizations. However, Fire the Liars must maintain a non partisan position. This is Phase I of the campaign and although it involves seeking answers from Conservative members, this is because they are the governing party that’s made the noted transgressions and maintained support for said actions.

On our day of action, we ask that participants refrain from bringing or wearing an organization’s identification. We must prevent the message from being confused by either media, parliament or the public.

Proper thanks will be offered to individuals and organizations in support of Fire the Liars. They will be noted on our website with appropriate due given to everyone and their establishments. We are happy to receive these relationships and show our solidarity with the wide range of interested parties coming together across Canada. Through our online connection these groups are welcome to contribute their input, comments as well as recognition.
