you may contact Global Volunteers. They also have a division in Jamaica, St. Lucia, and Costa Rica. They accept the skills set of anyone....construction, landscaping, teaching, cleaning, etc. they do have a fee (which is 100% tax deductable). but for those interested in serving and that dont have the funds...they do have grants to cover travel expenses.

How long you stay depends on how much time you have and what they have going on.

Please also note that most charitable organizations have a limited budget/funds to spend and unless the volunteer has specific/exceptional skills (computer, budgeting, finance, educators) for the specific project, they are not going to spend money on foreign volunteers like that.

they simply don't have the funds.

so even if a charity received and has 2 mill to spend in a jamaica, it makes sense financially for them to hire the local people to do most of the work..they may bring in 1 or 2 top mgmt from the US to manage and oversee and even that person's time on the island is very limited.

american red cross hires mostly locals as an example

peace corps is really the only organization I know but you already know the story with them so...

you would have to find a local charity and even if you did, they probably wouldn't be able to pay you or provide room and board

which is why i gave him the link to GV....I've done work with them and they do have funds to cover people who want to volunteer, but may not have the funds. I am not sure of what all the requirements are to get the grant (which is what they call it), but I know this organization...does take everyone (regardless of their skill set) and have funds (sometimes limited) to cover some/most expenses.

If he is serious...nothing hurts for him to try.

As harsh as this may seem, there are Jamaicans with similar skill sets to his and better who can perform the tasks. so what value is it that some one will fly down to Jamaica and have to be &quot;broken in&quot; to do a low skills jwork. There is a hell of a lot of Jamaicans who could do exactly what he has to offer.

If he had a skill, that was not available or in short supply in Jamaica I would make a call or 6 on his behalf. but he admits he can build things, is there a shortage of partially trained builders in Jamaica ???

The fact that u hope I fail in my goal to spend time in JA jus because I'm not jamaican born or have a bunch of money to throw around in JA is sad. I feel sorry for u. If I knew a poor jamaican guy who thought comin to the US would help him find some happiness in life, I would encourage it and offer any help I could give. In fact I know a few jamaicans here in new orleans. One of whom works as a general laborer for a construction company that I couldn't get a job with. I don't hope that person gets deported or anything. Glad to see he's doin good. It gives me hope. I've never understood why people are so territorial. We're all from the same family tree, on the same lil planet jus tryin to survive. But I've met your type before. Wouldn't doubt it if u lived in the US. To everyone else..thanks for the helpful advice and your time.

May not seem so, but no one here on this thread or the board wishes you any ill. They're just trying to get you to see as complete a picture as possible.

We tend not to sugar coat things around here - no matter how painful.

What I don't understand ... what is the difference between volunteering in the US, your local neighborhood or community and doing so in JA ... where it'll likely, cost you lots more money to do so - that you don't have lots of?

Vegas: Let the youth have fun, I have no objection to fun.. Go to dances, enjoy the beach.. I actively encourage this …Meet a girl above the age of consent and have consententual sex while wearing a condom.. if he so chooses marry the lady have children with them.. (If he marries then he can legally volunteer in Jamaica, but then it would be a woman!!!! And I have no moral objections to him having sex with a man, though it is illegal in Jamaica and I cannot endorse)… I cannot in good conscience advice him to smoke weed, tand though it has a positive impact on the economy it is illegal….

This is not some about high political or moral principle. This is a very personal perspective, one time I was a inexperience day laborer in Jamaica who did not know when his next job was going to come from…This young southern yanki doing one iota of unskilled labour be it washing the baxide of sick child, cutting the grass of a hospital, painting takes a days pay from some one exactly like who I was…There are thousands yes literally thousands of unemployed, under employed Jamaicans with equal or better skill set than this young man…

There is a call for more jobs in Jamaica, here we cannot afford to assuage this young mans dreams as the expense of a Jamaican….His desire to volunteer as admirable and self sacrificing as this seems ultimately will impact on Jamaican economy by taking away work from a Jamaican

Unless stated elsewhere, I am having a hard time believing this young person is of African descent. If that were the case, he would have found a way out of no way, instead of taking this route, but hey, it was not just the boat ride why we ended up where we did...or was it?
