This is indeed sad news. He will really be missed. He had what I consider to be the perfect Jamaican accent....really dreamy. I could have listened to him for days.

This is one of the reasons I liked listening to Perkins. Whether you agree or disagreed with him he made you think about what you believed and why you believed it. The man was 80 y.o.but was remarkably fluid in his thinking. From the Gleaner:

So what does Mr. Perkins think about God?.

God is in my view a fantastic engineer and a really great artist-- The impression that one gets is that Creation isn't a thing that occurred then God sat down idling. Gleaner: Are you suggesting that He has stopped taking an interest in what's happening on earth and has thereby gone unto other things?

Perkins: I think one of the true things is that God created man in His own image and the human brain does not have an equal. God has endowed man with creative power that is almost Godlike. I think that God would rather see man using his brain to go out there and work and create things rather than bowing down and kneeling down and kow towing.

Gleaner: You don't think God is worthy of worship?

Perkins: I would not want to be worshipped. I don't want people coming and telling me that what a wonderful fellow I am. I find it tedious. It is not of real significance or importance. It is not a question of whether He (God) is worthy of worship. It is a question of whether that is what He wants. I think He is bigger than that.

Gleaner: Don't you think the use of the brain can complementary to the bowing down and the worshipping?

Perkins: No. I don't think that God needs that. I don't think He wants it. I think if you were to ask Him, he would say it is a colossal waste of time. I think that if I fee the way that I do about me (that I don't want to be worshipped) and God is so much more superior to me, then how much more must He feel that way. He doesn't need you to tell Him how great He is. He knows. It would be more worshipful if you imitate Him - and try and do useful things rather than clap hands and kneel down and all them kind of things.

Gleaner: Do you believe in eternal punishment?

Perkins: I don't know that happens after people die.

Gleaner: Does it concern you that Hell might be a reality and that Heaven might be a reality?

Perkins: I am not into the realm of metaphysics. I am inclined to be, I hope, a rational person. I believe there are limitations in the power of knowing. I deal with what it is possible to know. What I cannot know, I leave alone.

Gleaner: Is there value in the study of Theology.

Perkins: There is value, I suppose, in study of any kind. Concerning Theology, I don't know. I haven't thought of that. I suppose so.

Gleaner: What do you think about Jesus?

Perkins: I think he was a great historical asset. I am not sure that I endorse the theology of Jesus.

Gleaner: Do you think He was a historical figure?

Perkins: Yes, I think he was.

Gleaner: Do you believe in the resurrection of Jesus?

Perkins: There you are getting into the realm of fancy.

Gleaner: There was no resurrection?

Perkins: I don't think so.

Gleaner: Do you think the Bible is God's guaranteed revelation of Himself?

Perkins: I don't think so. I think the Bible contains the writings of thoughtful men who tried to come to terms with their situations. I read the Bible the way one reads Shakespeare. I think the Authorised Version (King James Version) is one of the great works of the English Language. Regarding it (the Bible) as the authoritative source of what God has to say - I don't believe that.

Gleaner: Do you think there are shortcomings in the Bible?

Perkins: I don't look to identify shortcomings in the Bible. This is a literary work and I think much of it makes great reading. In fact, I have long wanted to do a programme in which there are readings from the Bible and hymns. I like church music.

Gleaner: Why haven't you pursued that programme idea?

Perkins: I don't know. I would do it, not for the religious value, but for the aesthetic value of it.

im coukld flirt wid young gal bad.... Im neva condisend to any one.... He admit liking Potia and yet critised her.. when some told him he hated her.. He said that sister P could not come with in a mile of him without hugging.. He hated Cuban poltical system but he admit admiring Castro Integrity..... To the point he said if any one told him that Castro took a a penny for himself he would call that person a liar.....

Years ago I heard him being a berate some one for calling claiming he hates socialism, pointing out that without the soviet union the concept of Jamaica would not exist,....

He was clear that he thought the study of black history was nessesary, but I got the impression he thought that the current styd missed the point of study...

He was unabiguious with his support for the rights of gays..He never seem to get the need to attack them.... He I got the impression was never quite comfortable discussing this issue...

I met m as a 18 year old and got into an argument with him... His wife calmed him down...The only great and good I ever met..... Last year I sent him an email which he read out and once phoned his program and spoke on it....About honey, energy / oil consumption, asked him what he expected Jamaica to be like in 2010 in 1960, and Marshal Tomechenko...We disagreed when I claomed the first function of a poltician was to attain power and retain poweer.. to expect anything elase was unreasonable). I had been planing on calling him again and one thing I wanted to discuss who would succede him...

I admit in the last year I listened to him monday to thursday for 4o minutes while i prepared my evening meal.. He had a great influence on my life along with John Hearne and Morris Cargil...I listened to them or read their workand think they articulated ideas and wethink re funny.. Even though I Herne was a bit dour.. but then the socilist did beat the [censored] out of him... (cant wait for that deninal)

I never realised that he was the narrator of Dulcemina till Evan mentioned it on here !....(His wife read out half my email and in it I suggested that they bring back Dulcemina: Even came up with a few points of character development Cyclos would be an MP, Roxi returns to look for his long lost love after making his fortune as a banker and Nunville became a Don.. that solicited his great laugh.....)

Motty a champion for truth and justice. A man for all seasons. A thinker who encouraged and provoked thought no matter what the subject arose.
An aesthetic who loved sweet sounds and who himself had a youthful voice, who loved hearing others, what was said. A man who had a memory of an elephant. He often recited poetry and quotations he learnt and heard from he was a boy. He could sing too. Motty sung on air once till he wept. He was real. A man of tears and a man of laughter. Motty Perkins my hero, my main man, my mentor, my real Jamaican man.

Motty`s line of thinking to me was clean as a surgical theatre. He was a model on logic. Often times he would answer his critics by asking, &quot;If...so and so is so...then...this has to be so....How then can you come here and say such rubbish...
Man! Motty could provoke you....trying his honest best to get one to think clearly and not to be emotional but to be honest and truthful.
