Texting, and listening to music may have distracted boy killed by train
OSHAWA — Witnesses say a 16-year-old boy who died after being hit by a train in Oshawa may have been distracted by texting and listening to music.
Durham regional police say an eastbound freight train hit the Oshawa boy Monday afternoon. He died after being airlifted to a Toronto-area hospital.
Witnesses told police the boy was walking on the sidewalk and entered a level CN rail crossing, unaware of the approaching train.
Police say the rail crossing was equipped with automated traffic barriers, bells and lights which were fully activated at the time.
Trains approaching the crossing do not blow their whistle due to local bylaws. A pedestrian barrier is not in place at the crossing.
Witnesses said texting and listening to music through headphones may have been a factor in the boy not hearing the train.
