Re: Patty Day in Toronto - Is it celebrated every year
The City of Toronto officially declares special days for scores of events and causes each year. But, announcing Feb. 23 as Jamaican Patty Day may be asking too much.
To wit, here’s an unofficial proclamation:
Whereas the ubiquitous patty, Jamaica’s golden gift to palates everywhere, deserves to be celebrated as the island nation celebrates 50 years of independence from Britain;
Whereas, Toronto residents have embarked on the largest independence year celebrations outside Jamaica, and are urging people everywhere to explore everything Jamaican in 2012;
Whereas, Jamaican-Canadians — from Michael Lee Chin to Kamala Jean Gopie, Samantha Mahfood to Alvin Curling — reflect Toronto’s motto, Diversity Our Strength;
And, whereas, Jamaicans of all class and status and station partake of the humble patty; and recall fondly their childhood days when the omnipresent patty was the main defence against hunger in the schoolyard or at lunch counters;
Whereas the tasty patty now holds a secure position in Toronto’s gastronomical lore, alongside the pizza, roti, sushi, burger and perogi, as favourite street food and fast, affordable snack of international origins;
And whereas all peoples of all political stripes, from Queen Elizabeth to Brian Mulroney, Fidel Castro to Pierre Trudeau have munched on a patty or two, to great reviews;
And whereas the patty has evolved into a food for all seasons and palates, wrapping everything from beef to beans, tofu to turkey;
Whereas Toronto holds a special place in the history of the Jamaican patty in Canada;
Whereas this history made headlines — “patty wars” and “Canada bans patty” — around the world in February 1985, when the very future survival of the patty seemed threatened to the point of extinction;
Whereas, the “patty-wagon police,” a.k.a. food inspectors from the Canadian department of Consumer and Corporate Affairs, unappetizingly abbreviated, CACA, determined that the beef patty did not have enough, er, beef to be called a patty, and declared fines of $5,000 would be imposed unless Kensington Patty Palace and others cease and desist from the cruel deception of patty lovers;
Whereas, customers and vendors revolted at the scurrilous suggestion that the beloved snack be called a pie, and threatened legal and other action; and lawyer Lloyd Perry declared himself the official Patty Guardian and vendors rallied to launch a class action before a “patty summit” resulted in the compromise of “Jamaican patty” or “patty,” but not beef patty;
And whereas, then PM Brian Mulroney, visiting Jamaica, hailed the accord averting an international incident, and munched on patties to seal the deal;
Whereas, Torontonians are gathering to celebrate the patty Thursday at A Different Booklist, the Bathurst St. bookstore in the heart of the old Caribbean community;
And whereas, bookstore owner Itah Sadu will be joined by the Jamaican Consul General, school children, patty proprietors, and Torontonians in search of a free patty;
Whereas Mayor Rob Ford and Councillor Michael Thompson have sent a congratulatory message to organizers, inviting Torontonians to “embrace the patty, take it to work, munch it in the classroom”;
Be it resolved that Feb. 23, 2012, be declared Jamaican Patty Day in Toronto.
And be it further resolved that all inhabitants celebrate with a patty and a soft drink, and sing Bob Marley’s “One Love” and say, “Irie” and “Cool Runnings,” and Montego Bay and everything else needed to warm up a cold February day in Toronto;
And be it further resolved that all Torontonians add to their bucket list the desire to taste a real Jamaican patty, in its natural environment, in Jamaica — a move that will help the sagging economy of the young, striving nation, approaching its golden anniversary.
