...."where are you from" how do you answer ? Is 'home' your current address ? Where you were born ? Where you grew up ? Where your ancestors were from ?

I have always found the diversity of answers to that question interesting if for no other reason than it forces one to contemplate how enormous a task it sometimes is for members of diasporic communities to resolve the question of their own <span style="font-weight: bold">cultural</span> identity.

This lady I know, very accomplished presented at some conference here in NY. Some other one noticed she had an accent and told her how inspirational the presentation was, but included the question, &quot;Where are you originally from?&quot; My lady seh, Guyana. The American responded with, &quot;Oh who you speak English very well.&quot; Presenter responded, &quot;Oh you do too!!!&quot;

I never say I'm British or English because that used to arouse strange looks.

When I'm outside the UK, which is often, my stock answer is: 'I was born in London (or England) and my grandparents are Jamaican.'

I let the enquirer decide what I am and where I'm from.
