A 47-year-old man is charged with raping a teenage girl in the kitchen of her home, according to court documents obtained Thursday.
Leon Schroeter, a citizen of Jamaica who also lives in East Hartford, is charged with two counts of first-degree sexual assault, one count of first-degree unlawful restraint and several counts of fourth-degree sexual assault. Arrested by Manchester police on Feb. 16, Schroeter was in jail on $500,000 bail pending an appearance in Superior Court in Manchester on March 19.
Police learned of allegations against Schroeter in January from a social worker at Manchester High School, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. The girl, now 17, is a special education student at the high school. She has a learning disability, but the social worker said the girl does not have intellectual limitations, the warrant said.
In January 2011, when she was 16, the girl told police that Schroeter, a friend of the family, came to her home at night when her parents were out. The girl's sister left after Schroeter gave her money for McDonald's, and he and the girl were alone in the house, the warrant said.
Schroeter followed her into the kitchen and trapped her by a deep freezer, the warrant says. She tried pushing him away, but he held her and told her to bend over the freezer, according to the warrant. She refused, but Schroeter continued assaulting her and raped her, the warrant says.
The girl said that Schroeter had kissed her and touched her inappropriately at other times, and that on one occasion he told her "he loved her at first sight" and wanted her to be his wife, the warrant says. Schroeter has a wife and two children in East Hartford, the warrant says.
In an interview with police on Feb. 7, Schroeter admitted that he held the girl and had sexual intercourse with her, the warrant said. He said he had been drinking, police said.
"Leon continued that it was not something he planned to do but that it just kind of happened," he told police, according to the warrant.
The girl, police said, described in a recent interview "how she was very sad and upset about what Leon had done to her. She stated that she was taught to respect her elders and she did not understand why Leon did this to her," according to the warrant.
