Girl forced to marry rapist; kills herself

Moroccan activists have stepped up pressure to scrap laws that allow rapists to marry their victims - after a 16-year-old girl killed herself.

Amina Filali swallowed rat poison after being severely beaten during a forced marriage to her rapist.

Ms Filali's father said that when he reported the rape of his daughter, he was advised of the option to marry by court officials."The prosecutor advised my daughter to marry, he said: 'Go and make the marriage contract'," Lahcen Filali told an online newspaper, goud.ma.

Local media reports say that the girl complained to her family about her mistreatment at the hands of the man who raped her - but they disowned her, prompting her to take her own life.

So sad to see these monsters destroy the lives of women by rape. They know the stigma that these societies tie to it and use rape as a weapon.

hmmm according to the article they (the Moroccans) like to think of themselves as progressive and want to be perceived as &quot;modern&quot; (can't remember the quote exactly but that is the gist)

Yes, very very sad to hear of this but the forced marriage doesn't surprise me...

It happens both ways based on what I'm told by my friends there... Even if a virgin young woman and man have consensual sex outside of marriage; the man is required to marry her (even if he does not want to) out of honour to her family. If he resist marriage, he has the choice of paying a high fine to the family or face jail time. I'm told most Muslim men insist on marrying a virgin. The family sees the unmarried non-virgin daughter as a financial burden.
