West Indian Accents

[Tropicana]

There is an Irish financial planner on TV who beats up the couples and princesses who overspend. She lick dem upside dem head. Sometimes she sounds Jamaican. Wha' mek? Have the Irish left a heavy imprint on the Jamaican accent?

How come when the histories of the various English speaking islands and the peoples of origin are similar, the accents are so completely different?

Just curious.

Dat is a very interesting question. Really, never thought of it before. Sure would make for a very interesting case study.

I would think, part of it would be, the lack of direct inter-island interaction of the local people would be part of it, since they are very far apart. Each island inhabitants pick up subtle differences in speech pattern over time, mixed in with the land owner's, slaves influence (hidden codes etc), indentured servants, pirates, etc. As time pass the mix of dialect would become very distinct between islands, since they don't directly interact (like say the islands of T&T). Just my guess at yuh question.

Many of the overseers in Jamaica were from Ireland and Scotland, so they have left their mark on pronunciation.

Jamica has irish Scottish sccent India trinidad and Guyana have welsh due to the predominance of those areas of origination of the british that people and brought their interpretation of the language.

There is two reason for that I know of
1. Most white (European) slave s(euphemistically known as &quot;indentured servants&quot in the new world were of Irish descent.
2. Most overseer and slave drivers were Irish in English colonies.

are you talking about Gail Vaz Oxlade? she sounds Jamaican because she is Jamaican.

Some of the Irish pronounce words like Jamaican. There was an influence in Jamaica. That is how I got my last name...

i used to hear that it was the bajans who sounded most irish, and they sound nothing like jamaicans.

When I was in Barabdos, this White Bajan guy came up to me and started talking. We talked for a long time as his flight was delayed. He even told me that his people were indentured servants who had come to Barbados. After a while I said, &quot;You're sounding a bit Irish&quot;. I need a job. I don’t know what my job should be. I have no idea what I am going to do next, but I want to do something different. So find something, okay?’”

Reportedly, the heavens responded. That day, an invitation to host Til Debt Do Us Part, a show in which she helps couples address poor money habits, arrived by e-mail, she says. She had no ambition to be on television. But a production company considered her a good choice because of the persona she had built up through her print journalism. A change in her approach to money (due to witnessing a close friend die) helped her counsel people on the show about focusing on what really matters to them. “Up until then, I was very security oriented,” she explains. “But I realized that you have to not only take care of the issues so that you have the money, but you also have to have a great life … If we can’t learn to appreciate the life that we have and enjoy the small joys then we’ll continue to sacrifice what we do have for what we think we need. It’s a losing game.”
