im trying to think which of the liberties i previously enjoyed are now under threat.


my point is that many of us live in countries were we never enjoyed the liberties that are supposedly under threat now. so if you never had them how can they be taken away?

Shall I start with liberties you previous enjoyed. Taken away? Eh? Now we have to carry an ID card. Or else. How about the indefinite detention of anyone deemed a terrorism suspect without charge or trial, including U.S. citizens on U.S. soil. What about CCTV cameras everywhere and GUYS WHO CAN SHOOT AND KILL TRAYVON AND WOULD HAVE AVOIDED TRAIL IF IT WASN'T FOR THE PUBLIC OUTCRY.

I see your point Rich, these things have not affected you personally. But I'll visit you in jail if you're a victim of a gross miscarriage. I am Trayvon. You're obviously not.

Derek..only 5% of the world population lives in the US so I am not speaking on a personal basis but rather as part of the other 95% of the world population..

In Jamaica where i spent the better half of my life citizens are killed by the state on whim without consequence.. these is provision in Jamaican law for indefinite detention without charge.

In Canada were i now live there has been from before i moved here a process to indefinitely detain foreign nationals and immigrants (i think i fall into that category) if the government wants to.

so you tell me what did i have that I am losing(or in danger of losing) now?

My point is, civil liberties are<span style="text-decoration: underline"> slowly, bit by bit</span> being eroded. You could not have been detained on spurious BS 20 years ago.

the Canadian law to which I refer came into effect in 1979

i would actually argue with all the information sources available today it is much harder for the government to abuse citizen rights that it was even 20 years ago.

just in the case of the US...do you think the killing of a black teenager by a white man for no reason watch would have even made the newspaper in 1965?

look at Jamaica..I can give you all kinds of anecdotes of extrajudicial police killing that never saw the light of day...the same thing would be all over the news now.
