MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (AP) —<span style="font-weight: bold"> Police in Georgia handcuffed a kindergartner after the girl threw a tantrum</span> and the police chief defended the action.

The girl's family demanded Tuesday that this central Georgia city change policy so that other children aren't treated the same way. They say the child was shaken up by being put in a cell at the police station.

Salecia Johnson, 6, was accused of tearing items off the walls and throwing furniture in an outburst Friday at Creekside Elementary School, Macon television station WMAZ-TV (http://on.wmaz.com/HPb7nr ) reported. Police said the girl knocked over a shelf that injured the principal.

The school called police. The police report says when an officer tried to calm the child in the principal's office, she resisted and was handcuffed. The girl was charged with simple assault and damage to property.

Police Chief Dray Swicord says the department's policy is to handcuff people in certain situations.

&quot;Our policy states that any detainee transported to our station in a patrol vehicle is to be handcuffed in the back and there is no age discrimination on that rule,&quot; Milledgeville Police Chief Dray Swicord told WMAZ.

The girl's aunt, Candace Ruff, went with the child's mother to pick her up from the police station. She said Salecia was by herself in a holding cell and complained about the handcuffs.

&quot;She said they were really tight. She said they really hurt her wrists,&quot; Ruff told the Associated Press. &quot;She was so shaken up when we went there to pick her up.&quot;

Officials at Creekside Elementary did not immediately return calls Tuesday.

&quot;We would not like to see this happen to another child, because it's horrifying. It's devastating,&quot; Ruff said.

nope. it's brutality. people (especially authority figures) must equip themselves to deal with children in an appropriate and effective way. simple as that. i would be raising bloody murder if that happened to my kid, regardless of how badly behaving he or she were.

authority figures , especially mothers should mek sure dat dem behave demselves in such a way rung dem children dat said children wudden tink tearing up a classroom is allowed under ANY circumstances...tearing posters off the walls, sling furniture so dat u injure smaddy, dat deh behaviour come from home....an dis naw stop dis pickney from being on a future episode of Scared Straight cause much gwine to be made re har being handcuffed ...from har age to har ethnicity n nutten done about her socialisation....mi know seh my child wud not try dat cause she would have home training fi wat she can do n not do..children can act out but dis pass di mark..dem days is like nutten too far out fi dem do...

we have had this discussion pon yah wen a similar situation came up ...wrestle wid di child an any bruises n is a whole odda issue...if the child wont keep still, an physical attempt to restrain n some effort it would seem would have to come into play, n we would be talking about bruising etc...cyan pepper spray n cyan put awn a straight jacket...so wat next...if di chile naw respect har teachers who she see daily , y di presence a police a go mek a diffrance...matter of fak it seem it neva mek any diffrance..sorry <span style="font-weight: bold">mi stop mek excuse carte blanche </span>due to dem age....dem kids a emulate di adutls rung dem n can be as dangerous pon a whole lot of levels...of course in a level world where taxes actually went to look after n into the societal issues within the country, dem would investigate that child's environ...butttt

I am on the fence about this one...kid muss learn fi respeck authority figures...but cops shouldnt be the one fi teach dem dat at that age....blame poor parenting here cah believe you me fi mi pickney dem wudda more fraid a me than police if dem did gallang so a school...

just today, Sar had a playdate over a classmate house and when mi come home she tell mi how she was surprised that her friend was rude to the mom and grandmom. At 5 she already know seh dem tings cudden gwaan inna fi mi house. Nuff pickney nuh get dat memo at home so dem grow big an tun menace to society

vannie, at six years old a child's cognitive function is still developing. if that child has not had the benefit of being properly raised at home to understand how to express herself in a non-violent way, if that is the only way she knows how to react when she is upset about something, how the hell is handcuffing her improving her understanding of what is right behaviour?

you are prepared to excuse the adults who have waaaaaaaaaay more resources to learn how to deal with problem children, and have opted to take the convenient way out, rather than excuse the child - who has not only been let down by the parents in their lack of parenting, but also by the school and the police in their disregard for her rights SIMPLY because she is a child?

Mi have a fren whose 6 yr old (Susie) is GOING TUH KILL HAR before shi turn seven for shi is possessed! Memba mi tell unnoo dat.

in the world of old where political correkness neva rule i would abhor the use of handcuffs to restrain...BUT we know dat if u hold on to a child who does not go limp, but who continues to be agitated in movement some sort of injurt might take place to said child and the discussion then would be too much force used to restrain....cognitive function is fi children dat have some rational in dem dna....as to improving her understanding of wat is right behaviour given background as u stated, hell it is said backgrun whe mek har react dat way to authority figures in the way she did...cause all she hear is 'aint nobody going to tell me wat i muss do, how i must act....'...dat is all u hear in the US dese days out of the mouths of children, dem close to age mothers and middle-aged grandmothers...and yes the children out of this scenario r some of the worst offenders when it come to no behaviour...so sorry, the baby been tossed out in the bath water in the new parenting style or absent of parenting style...like Bernie Mac use to seh wen a chile a look pon u in di way an adult would dat chile a figga out wedda dem can take u dung..so u betta tek dem dung fuss...lol
