Gov't clarifies big NY delegation
Thursday, April 26, 2012
GOVERNMENT yesterday moved to clarify the size of its delegation presently in New York.
A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) yesterday said that the impression was "being mistakenly given" that the seven-member delegation, led by Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, left for the United States together.
The clarification came yesterday, a day after Opposition Leader Andrew Holness raised questions about the size of the delegation, saying that it sent a bad signal, especially on the eve of the tabling of a "difficult budget".
Apart from Simpson Miller, the delegation included three other ministers in Sandrea Falconer (information), Wykeham McNeill (tourism and entertainment), and Phillip Paulwell (energy), in addition to special advisors Delano Franklyn, Carlton Davis, and Dr Vin Lawrence, chairman of Clarendon Alumina Partners.
Yesterday the OPM said that only Drs Davis and Lawrence, "who will be participating in critical talks with the president and other senior executives of Alcoa on matters related to the bauxite/alumina industry", travelled with the prime minister on Tuesday.
Minister Falconer, the statement said, left the island on Monday evening to "deal with the TIME magazine function" , which took place last night, and which Simpson Miller was honoured as one of TIME's 100 Most Influential Persons for 2012.
Paulwell, according to the statement, left for New York yesterday to participate in the bauxite/alumina talks.
"Minister Paulwell and Drs Davis and Lawrence will return to the island on Thursday," the statement said, noting that Falconer's assignment, too, would have ended yesterday.
Meantime, the statement said McNeill, who had previously arrived in the US on "official tourism business", "at no cost to the Government", joined Simpson Miller's delegation Tuesday to "explore and engage the tourism opportunities which can flow from her receiving the prestigious TIME magazine award".
He will return on the weekend..
Meanwhile, Franklyn will join the prime minister tomorrow for an official reception which the State of Pennsylvania and the business community in Philadelphia are hosting for her.
The prime minister will return to the island on Sunday.

The talks described by the Prime Minister as ‘fruitful’ ended with Alcoa expressing satisfaction that “a path had been established for the future viability of the company’s operations in Jamaica."
Alcoa and the government, through the company Jamalco, mines bauxite and refine it into alumina at its operations in Clarendon.
