whey de ministry of education deh, imagine, these students dont graduate yet, so how dem expect dem fe pay tuition......they dont have all the funding scholarships foreign countries may have, so this is outrageous......if the students cant pay, they cant take their exams???










Protesting students stop UWI exams

STUDENTS at the University of the West Indies (UWI) who were barred from taking exams because they hadn’t paid tuition fees, this morning turned their protests up another notch, when they turned over desks and chairs and ordered legitimate students sitting exams out of exam rooms.

The protesters, who were peacefully demonstrating outside the administration building earlier this morning, soon got aggressive, and insisted that if they couldn’t sit exams, no one else could.

Some were sprawled out on desks, others raised such a ruckus that the police had to be called in.

UWI officials insist that they have for months given the students room for dialogue, and those who owe upwards of $30,000 would not be allowed to sit the exams.

More than six exams were postponed.

Agreed. The only reason I would say to allow them to write the exam and hold the grades while withholding access to future registration is from a financial point of view the Prof them done get paid to teach the class and it is cheaper to pay invigilators to supervise one exam than the supplementals that will be necessary when these kids finally pay their fees.

agreed, might as well mek them tek the exam, hold the grades and no registration until paid in full.

Don't know what to say.
What is the use of accepting students if you are not going to let them sit the exams?

The GOJ must make a decision on Education and the Economy.
Fix the economy, the State fund education up to tertiary level or cut it loose and let it fend for itself in the marketplace.

Each country, each economy is different.
Isn't Canada one of the most expensive country in the world to live?

DALRYMPLE-PHILIBERT CALLS ON PM SIMPSON-MILLER TO FULFILL HER PROMISE TO UWI STUDENTS.

The Opposition Jamaica Labour Party is this afternoon expressing grave concern at this morning's development at the University of the West Indies, Mona which saw students protesting against the barring of students with tuition arrears from sitting their final exams.



Mrs. Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert, Opposition Spokesperson on Education,<span style="font-weight: bold"> says she empathizes with the students especially in light of then Opposition Leader Portia Simpson-Miller's commitment to them during a visit to the campus last year, to effectively treat with their concerns pertaining to deregistration, should her party form government.
</span>


Mrs. Dalrymple-Philibert decried Mrs. Simpson-Miller's inaction as Prime Minister thus far, and went on to describe the current impasse as unhealthy for the education sector and the development of the tertiary system in general, and in particular, the students who need to remain psychologically focused on their exams at this time.



The University's administration, Mrs. Dalrymple-Philibert added, must explore and implement innovative ways to stimulate compliance among students, while remaining sensitive to the needs of those who are not able to pay their tuition fees in as timely a manner as the University stipulates.



Mrs. Dalrymple-Philibert called on the government to intervene immediately, especially as we approach Education Week. Prime Minister Simpson-Miller, she said, must act as a matter of urgency, in fulfilling the promise she made to UWI students last year by implementing a mechanism that will allow them to sit their final exams notwithstanding tuition arrears.

I would say it is tit for tat if the last GOJ tried it one way, PSM visited the students and said we are going to do it this way. By all means hold her to it.

As for the argument that PSM is missing in action. I actually like when the Prime Minister does not speak on all things, but delegate. There are some things that the PM cannot (<span style="font-style: italic">or should not)</span>, shy from:

Things she <span style="font-weight: bold">personally</span> made committments on. &gt;&gt;&gt;&gt; JEEP, UWI Students, Gay Rights <span style="font-style: italic">(or more properly Buggery Law)</span>; IMF and Contract Negotiations done in 2 weeks; JEEP; Transparency; Corruption, Republic status.
Human Rights issues&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt; Police shootings, Crime, National Symbols desecration, Child Abuse.
Other issues: CARICOM

<span style="font-weight: bold">Things she should stay away from</span>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt; Cases in court/arbitration; Chris Gayle matter, calling on Mayor Harris to resign.
She should make sure her surrogates offer timely responses or solutions to the matters she does not speak on.

One gets the impression that all she is doing is nothing when it please her, dipping her mouth where it does not belong and when she is called out for inaction on matters of importance she hide behind the <span style="font-weight: bold">Browning Minister Of Dis-Information</span>.

The UWI administration should not have barred the students who are in tuition arrears from taking the exams. That was unnecessary and they were just begging for an uproar

What they should do is just not award the student his or her grade and or degree until they've settled their arrears.

LOL.................wait till dem bar the whole a UWI from leaving the Rock without paying Student Loans!
