David Riley has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Wolmer’s Boys School's track and field team, after falling out with the school’s administration over an incident involving a student athlete, who was expelled from the school some time ago.
According to information reaching The Gleaner Riley was fired after he agreed to write a character reference for the student without consulting the school’s hierarchy.
The recommendation was used in court to support a claim that was filed by the student's parents for their child to be allowed to continue his schooling and
track team participation at Wolmer's.
The situation stemmed from an altercation that took place last November between another member of the track team and the student, whose father had
allegedly pulled a firearm at the other boy in defence of his son.
A decision was then made by the school board to expel the student, based on the actions of his father - a move that led to an injunction being filed by the youngster’s parents and a subsequent ruling by the court for the student to remain in classes and on the track team.
The issue with Riley however, lies with his agreement to prepare and
present a character reference to the legal team representing the
youngster in which he described the child as a good student and athlete who is well-behaved and in a good position to be recruited by tertiary institutions.
This reportedly did not go down well with the school’s hierarchy, which felt that the head coach should have consulted the administration prior to agreeing to write reference.
Attempts to contact Wolmer's Boys' Principal Walton Small was unsuccessful.
Riley led Wolmer’s to a historic Inter-Secondary School Sports Association/GraceKennedy Boys championship title in 2010.
