Nuclear power for Jamaica being considered


Jamaica continues to combat its energy challenges by drilling for gas and oil.

A shift toward nuclear power is also a possibility.

That’s according to Energy Minister Philip Paulwell who outlined his vision for liberalization of the national grid while speaking at the University of the West Indies (UWI).

He said “We need to find new fuel sources and so we are pursuing natural gas.”

“We believe that there is a role for coal and I am committed one day, for Jamaica to utilize nuclear.”

there is a theory that while there may seem to be an abundance of fissible material, there is simply not enough in an extractable economic form....

Solar has a part of any energy mix....

You can alway pray that FAR hits HC if tey drill next year!

solar and wind not to mention hydro...would be sensible;

unfortunately it is not sense that wins out in politics...
the fossil fuel lobbies still carry too much weight in america to be seriously challenged by other energy forms...

obviously enertaining nuclear they have learned nothing from chernobyl nor fukishima

JPS has 8 hydro plants and they have 1 wind installation

what they need to do is to dfind a way to start incorporating these things directly into the housing units;

excess power can go back into the grid or at the least cut electric bills

i think if you want to go off grid then go off grid. i see a problem if the utility has to generate for max possible load and on a sunny day load is down 30% and when it rain demand spikes. right now this is not a problem since the number of customers who are supplementing is small.

all of this is not going to help.. 30% of the carbon generated by Jamaica comes from cooling.. air cons... This is exaserbated by the poor design of houses... There can be no lowering of the electriity consumption unless the desighn of houses are addressed... and there are fundamentally simple solutions that are non western... Look to the solutions that are in India and the Philipines and Africa.. or even back to the design of housed that we had a centuary ago....
