Anger as owner evicts 80 from Duke Street property

TENSIONS were high at a large tenement yard at 118 - 120 Duke Street this morning, where more than 80 people were evicted by the new owner of the property, commonly called Big Yard.

Police, who accompanied a team of approximately 25 young men who were apparently employed by the property owner to enforce the eviction, had to be keeping the peace as the residents were angry and started hurling missiles and abuse at the young men.

The Jamaica Observer learnt that the owner of the land gave the residents notice last week.

This morning the eviction team arrived, threw out people’s belongings, and demolised the board and zinc houses on the large property.

This maybe the top of Duke Street above where the telephone company used to be (above Parade or North Street - been away too long don't too remember the streets). The lower part (going towards the sea) of Duke Street was where the US Embassy used to be and lots of law offices, Dunn, Cox &amp; Orrett and Myers, Fletcher &amp; Gordon, etc.

my very first school was ST JOSEPHS (girls) and ALOYCIOUS (boys) was next door, now me hear dem jine up de two a dem,


Rich - Gordon House never deh pan Duke Street to, like North Street and Duke St.

i'm thinking that last week was the last notice that was sent. how things guh the owner probably send a bunch of notices before that.

No SistaCtry - I think Parliament is on Duke Street not too far from where the Telephone Company used to be (not sure if the phone company is still there) it is not below East Queen Street. I remembered because the lower part of Duke Street had the Embassy, and I used to work @ Myers, Fletcher &amp; Gordon and it was located at 36 Duke Street. AJ Nicholson had an office on Duke Street right off Harbour Street, and Lufthansa Airlines had their office right across the street from Broad bent Eye doctor.

The old Gleaner was on Harbour Street at Princess Street. The Coast Guard was at the bottom of Princess Street along with the Collector Generals &amp; Custom Department. The Gleaner moved up to North Street in the late 60's or early 70's.
