Your sentiments is honorable is to be admired, but the reality is as Jamaicans many of us find ourselves vilified by not only non-blacks, but Blacks from other nations, including Somalia and sadly other Caribbean nations. Many of us find ourselves, or better yet, the Jamaican community vilified by even other Jamaicans, simply because we are Jamaicans.
Shortly after the shooting, even on our &quot;new&quot; Caribbean/black radio station, the program masters were placing the ownership of the crime on Jamaicans, BEFORE the police had even put out a description of the shooter.

As a Jamaican, this is one less (socially responsible) accusation I (we) somehow have to answer to at functions and gathering within the community. This (hopefully) also helps to dispel the convenient notion that Jamaicans somehow owns the patent on crime and are somehow uniquely genetically engineered to be criminals..

I have a co-worker who was terified to vacation in Jamaica. Even terrified at the thought of staying at a Sandals. She thought she would be robbed or murdered. Well because of peer pressure from her friends, who wanted to visit the island, she went to Sandals in Ochi. So when she come back she told me the story of how her husband had left his camera in the back of the van after arriving at the airport for the flight home. The driver later noticed the camera in the back of the van and returned to the airport and did not rest until he tracked them down and returned the camera. Since that vacation she went to Europe where her hubby had his wallet and phone pick pocketed.

Even after all that, she seh she still afraid to visit Jamaica again but would return to Europe in a heartbeat.

Mi hear yu! It just amazes me that someone can be affraid to visit Jamaica while they are booked to live behind the walls of a Sandals for a week. They think that they will be safer walking the streets of Rome instead.
