(NECN/KNSD: Christine Haas) - Teens are turning to an unusual method for getting drunk without drinking -- alcohol-soaked tampons.
Tina Coffelt runs the New Horizon Sober House in Encinitas, Calif.
"A big reason they do it is you get a faster high and then you don't have the stomach upset so the vomiting is rare," she explains.
Coffelt says she's not surprised that teenagers are looking for news ways to experiment, but she says direct insertion of alcohol into the body can be dangerous.
"It is a faster process of how much is going into the blood stream so there's a much higher risk of alcohol poisoning," she says.
A tampon can hold about one shot of vodka and the liquor is rapidly absorbed, providing a stronger, faster intoxication than simply drinking a shot.
Because absorbing the alcohol through the body doesn't involve the digestive tract, the kids don't experience any gag reflex, so they won't throw up when they've had too much and won't know if they've got alcohol poisoning.

"Teenagers have found a new way of getting drunk by inserting vodka-soaked tampons into their vaginas, says a Phoenix police resource officer. And it's not just girls; boys are inserting the alcohol-drenched feminine hygiene products in their rectum.
The disturbing trend, first noted by the Oxford Journals in 1999, said the teens experience "rapid onset of effects, lower doses of alcohol are required for intoxication, and the reduced likelihood of recent alcohol consumption being being detected on the breath," all contributed to the popularity of this method of abusing alcohol."
