Woman eaten by rats?

A woman who is said to be of unsound mind was found dead in Tawes Pen, Spanish Town, St Catherine, yesterday.

Dead is Girlie Parker, 85, a labourer of Tawes Pen.

The gruesome discovery was made by a relative about 6:30 a.m. Parker, who is affectionately called 'Miss Girlie', is said to have had a strange relationship with rats.

"From Friday I did not see her, so I decided to do a search for har. After mi use mi phone light, mi find har body bite up, har nose bite off and other bites on har body," Parker's son Trevor Ferguson said. He said that he really missed his mother who despite her illness was a loving and kind person.

"Miss Girlie has a strange behaviour, if she goes on the road she buys two buns, one for the rat and one for harself," one female resident said.

The consensus of the residents is that Miss Girlie may have eaten things left by the rodents, died and was subsequently bitten by the rats.

Checks made at the Spanish Town Police Station revealed that the matter is being treated as sudden death.

The Star was told, however, that tests are under way to ascertain the cause of death.

I saw an old woman, dead, being removed from the little one room house she lived in in Jones Town, and there were may two rhatid big rats still gnawing on her. They had no fear of the men taking her out, and looked like they were seriously thinking of attacking because their meal was being interrupted....

The sight was so chilling...

This does hurt because of 3 things. The paper reporting her as being of unsound mind - where was community to look out for her? 2) Her being 85 years of age- where was the community to look out for her? 3) The combination of being unsound mind and 85 meant that someone should be with her all the time

THE body of an elderly woman was on Saturday found with rat bites on the face, sparking renewed calls from residents of Tawes Meadows in Spanish Town, St Catherine for assistance in dealing with the community's rodent problem.
Yesterday, Evrol Daley confirmed that the body of his mother, 80-year-old Victoria 'Girly' Parker, who he said was of unsound mind, was found on Saturday night with its face and other parts eaten by the rodents, which had invaded a small shack in her yard on Second Lane in the community.

Residents said the woman's body was found after she complained that she was coming down with the flu Saturday evening. Daley said his elder brother stumbled upon her body.
&quot;She has her house... but because her head is not so right she don't want to stay in the house. She prefers out here,&quot; Daley said, pointing to a small wood and zinc structure that his mother had for years called her home.
Residents noted that the senior citizen would often leave scraps of meat and other food in the dilapidated shack that contained her clothes as well as refuse collected from the street. They said that the structure, one of many in the community, is a haven for rats and blamed the rodents for Parker's illness and subsequent death.
As such, the residents appealed to the Spanish Town Public Health Department to urgently deal with the rodent infestation in their community.

The woman's concerns were shared by all in the gathering who yesterday combed through some of the items Parker had stored in her shack.

85 yr old mad ooman a trang trang sensible ooman a cook har owna pot wash har owna clothes and will trace off nebody weh come to live wid her or try to bring har go live wid dem....and ppl do look out for dem....dem no see har fi a couple days so dat was strange hence y r son go look fi har....

mad ppl in the community and ppl give dem food and tings all the time...i guess wat dem need and dont get is medication...that is the sad part i guess. cus dem no mad to all dat most a dem i would classify as high functioning mad

It is a very sad story but we have cases here where elderly people who live alone pass away and are partially eaten by their pets

one of the biggest problem with jamaica is that the jamaican ppl dont take responsibility fi dem own actions.

i am not saying that the government ie the health dept does not have some work to do here but the dam ppl dem need to realize that THEY are the gov. dem bawl bawl bout say garbage deh pon the streets etc etc....well who the hell put it there?

where i live in JA the garbage truck comes every Wednesday, on the off time it miss the route and come thursday, friday the latest. The truck doesnt go off the main residential streets so ppl who live a little ways off the main must bring their garbage to a designated spot. there is a rule dat dem only supposed to do this Tuesday nite to wed morning. but it never fails by wed night u see ppl start throwing garbage there for the dogs to get at. there use to be a big bin/cage thing there but the healt dep had to remove it bcus ppl were throwing dead dogs and all kinda stuff in deh.

this garbage in the road is a health hazard and an eye sore for the ppl on main who live next to it but u think these other ppl care? dem same on have to stand up next to it fi wait pan taxi, a fi dem same pickney have to walk pass it fi go skool....so y do they throw the garbage there? and these are the same ppl now that would complain say garbage pick up should be more than once a week

Yes all dat too.. Dat is why in some communities dem setup a buddy system to call each other daily, turn on a candle at night, turn it off in the morning ting....

i am one of dem who have to bring mine to the main even though my street is driveable. i think the reason the truck doesnt come up to our end may be the road not all the streets round by me i would consider driveable. and only the one main main strip linking our part of the community to a neighbouring one is paved. the street directly in front my house is basically us some other peeps who drive pay tractor fi level and mall it. and after dat its kinda rocky rocky. mi no sure if most a dem ppl way up topside me have papers fi dem land ( capture) so that might be a factor y garbage truck dont come?i dunno
