Ready, set... London!
380 local products already off to Olympic host city
LOCAL business operators are set for a good showing in London during the Olympics as the Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC) shipped 380 locally manufactured product brands to the United Kingdom (UK) over the weekend.
Jamaica Promotions (JAMPRO), one of the state agencies spearheading the promotional thrust of Jamaica’s products in the UK, told the Jamaica Observer yesterday that 58 suppliers signed on to the initiative to showcase their products under what has been dubbed the ‘Meet Jamaica 2012 Initiative’, aimed at inviting the world to experience all the facets of ‘brand Jamaica’.
Two major events of the initiative will be ‘Jamaica House’ — a trade affair featuring the best of brand Jamaica, to be held at the 02 Arena, five miles from the Olympic Stadium, from August 3 to 12; and ‘Jamaica in the Square’ scheduled for Birmingham City’s Victoria Square during the Games which coincide with Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of Independence celebrations.
Mark Thomas, communication manager at JAMPRO, told the Observer yesterday that the goods destined for Birmingham and London amount to 33,801 items.
He explained that there were 11 suppliers of fashion and accessories; 14 suppliers of food; 13, home accents; six suppliers of aromatherapy products; 10, literature and souvenirs; two suppliers of coffee; and two suppliers of Jamaica 50 apparel and novelty items.
“JBDC really worked hard to get the shipment off. A team of 15 led, by Things Jamaican Manager Janine Taylor, worked around the clock to pack (the goods) for sail,” Thomas told the Observer.
The products will be retailed in Victoria Square in Birmingham and at ‘Jamaica House’ at the 02 Arena from August 3 to 12.
The Birmingham City Council has thrown its full weight behind the staging of ‘Jamaica in the Square’, which will feature Jamaican products, culinary demonstrations, a craft market, food stalls, a reggae lounge bar and live Jamaican entertainment.
‘Jamaica House’, which is the signature international event of Jamaica’s 50th anniversary celebrations, will feature ‘Trade and Investment Days’ and a retail outlet called the ‘Jamaica Shop’ among a wide array of daily activities.
The Jamaica Tourist Board, JAMPRO and the Jamaica 50 Secretariat are the main drivers behind the staging of this event which will capture the essence of the island.
The 02 Arena will also be home to an official celebration of Jamaican culture and music called ‘Respect Jamaica 50th’.
The event, which will be staged by AEG Live, will feature 50 Jamaican legendary artistes. The line-up for the concerts include Jimmy Cliff, Sly and Robbie, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Ernest Ranglin, Toots & the Maytals, and Yellow Man among others. Younger acts will include Taurus Riley, Damian Marley, Morgan Heritage, and Shaggy.
The plans for the Jamaica 50 celebrations here in Jamaica and Jamaica House 2012 in London were unveiled at an event at the Spanish Court Hotel in Kingston on Monday.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Industry Investment and Commerce Anthony Hylton said Jamaica is not about to “miss the boat” in London as it did at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China, in 2008 and the World Championship in Daegu, South Korea, last year.
The minister said the opportunity allows for Jamaica to demonstrate to the world that it is not only a leader in sports but also in business.
As such, he said, it is imperative that Jamaica be promoted to the millions of persons, expected to be in that city during the Games, also as a premiere business destination.
“This event offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity... it is our chance to create a platform for further reach of Jamaican products,” he said.
