57 year old Argentine Bishop Fernando Bargallo has resigned after the publication of pictures showing him embracing a woman in a bikini on a Mexican beach.

Luigi Prandin, who founded the Villaregia Missionary Community, was ousted along with co-founder, Maria Luigia Corona, who knew of the liaisons but covered it up because she feared a scandal.


The scandals have raised fresh calls for priests to be allowed to marry.

Pope Benedict XVI has vigorously denied claims that abstention may have contributed to sex abuse scandals, insisting repeatedly that celibacy is central to the priesthood.

<span style="font-style: italic">In April, he issued a rare condemnation of errant priests, slamming in particular an &quot;appeal to religious disobedience&quot; launched by a group of Austrian clerics in 2011, which argued for an end to priestly celibacy.</span>

if john wants to be celibate and serve the lord so be it, then nothing nuh wrong with that. his choice.

but for those who know that vow is not one dem can keep, just move on to construction or something else or jine a religion that allow yuh fi have sex.

There are some very good reasons why priests aren't permitted to marry. Why they aren't permitted sex is more arguable to some people than why they aren't permitted to marry. *shrug*

The short version of the above is this (and I'm using my own words for the moment, not quoting officially from Catechism of the Catholic Church): <span style="font-weight: bold">Priests' vocation - as <span style="font-style: italic">in persona Christi</span>, or <span style="font-style: italic">in the person of Christ</span>, as the leadership of the Church and the church - is so overwhelming a load to bear that they cannot properly carry it <span style="text-decoration: underline">and</span> do proper justice to a spouse and family, at the same time; it cannot be done. Please remember that, in the Catholic Church, Marriage is a Sacrament also... and, as such, must be undertaken with all of the solemnity as - for example - an ordination to the priesthood.</span> (This is part of the reason why divorce is not a possibility, but that's a different issue, not for this thread.) <span style="font-weight: bold">But priests are men, humans, and as such, are unable &quot;do it all&quot;: They cannot give everything to both vocations: priesthood and marriage/family. Ergo, the Church does not even allow them to attempt this. Each Catholic man (with such interest) must choose for himself - hopefully with sufficient prayer, discernment, guidance, and humility - which is his true calling; is it the priesthood or is it marriage and family?</span>


Now we come to the point that more people are going to (or be willing to) argue: sex - <span style="font-weight: bold">Why not just let priests have sex, then?</span> Again, the answer is in the basic <span style="font-style: italic">raison d'etre</span>, or reason for existence, of sex, in the eyes of the Roman Catholic Church. Again, this is put in my words rather than the official words of the CCC just to simplify and make it short. <span style="font-weight: bold">According to the Church, sexual activity is reserved for married couples. Period. That's it. End of discussion. Sex is for procreation, certainly... and it's also for enhancing one's marriage, to help the two become/remain one.</span> This would be one of the Church's reasons for opposing redefining marriage to include same-sex marriages, for creating liturgy for blessings of same-sex unions, etc. Again, a topic for some other thread. <span style="font-weight: bold">Bearing in ind the Church's sole legitimate reason for sexual activity... it's plain to see that there's no possible reason to condone priests - unmarried men - having sexual activity.</span>


So yes, when a priest is caught having sex, he must be removed from office.

And when an archbishop or a bishop is caught having sex, he - being higher up the Church hierarchy - must certainly step down.

I don't recall having ever heard of a cardinal (not in modern times) having been thusly caught...

That ^ is extremely serious! Far more serious than what I was just talking about!

<span style="font-weight: bold">That's the sort of thing that could get him <span style="color: #CC0000">excommunicated</span>, on top of everything else.</span>
And despite his obvious lax morals, I'm willing to wager that he still believes in Catholic teachings, still considers himself Catholic, and will be horrified if he is excommunicated. What a shame. *shaking my head in disbelief and sorrow*
