CNN’s Anderson Cooper came out of the closet today, finally acknowledging one of TV’s most laughably well-known open secrets.

Anderson told The Daily Beast he feared that remaining silent about his sexual orientation would do more harm than good.

“It’s become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something - something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid. This is distressing because it is simply not true,” he wrote in an email to the online mag.

“The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.”

Anderson’s sexual orientation -- and refusal to discuss it -- has been a pop culture punch line for years.

Out Magazine took a jab at Cooper in 2007, making him the cover boy of an edition dedicated to “The Glass Closet.” Out, five years ago, called Cooper the No. 2 most influential gay American.

Anderson said he wanted to keep his private life private for the sake of his journalism career.

“I still consider myself a reserved person and I hope this doesn’t mean an end to a small amount of personal space,” Anderson wrote.

“But I do think visibility is important, more important than preserving my reporter’s shield of privacy.”

well he didn't really come out and make an announcement at least not like people usually do.


a friend of his at the <span style="font-weight: bold">daily beast</span> asked him a question (for an article I suppose), to which Anderson responded, and subsequently gave permission for his answer to be quoted.

am not really sure why people used/saw it as a punch line, his refusal to comment on his private life.

journalists are often in dangerous situations suh wah purpose it wouldan serve fi a chat bout yuh sexuality, religion etc ???

Anderson Cooper? A must him one never did think him gay nutten no wrang still. Ah poor Willow she is a tom bway no? my daughter has a friend who kinda look like shiloah, same haircut and tomboy.

last time mi see her inna one dress was first grade, and dem had a dance in 5th grade where she wore a skirt.

When I was young, I overheard my mom wondering to a friend if she thought I was going to be &quot;gay&quot;. That wasn't the word at the time, but I just can't remember what the word was. I ran with the boys, destroyed any dress that my mom patiently made me, and refused to play with the many dolls my mom continuously bought me. (I just remembered the word--&quot;queer&quot

Then, from age 12 on, I think she wished I was &quot;queer&quot;, because I like like men; too much, maybe. At the same time, I am not typically female. I don't react to situations like a woman, never gossiped with my girlfriends (the very few that I could really stand), still prefer pants and super casual, no make-up. <span style="font-weight: bold">WHATEVER!!! </span>

P.S. I've never been a vegetarian.
