Most American (for lack of a better term) Foods are designed to eaten with both hands ...sans fork/spoon and sometimes a knife. Maybe all Oprah was trying to confirm is that she can go to a upper-class Indian Family and eat with her two hands!

No you have to take an assessment of the entire landscape.
Oprah is born of this culture. We have some other cultural mixings.
Most of the items that make up the USA dinner plate have moved well away from flatware.......except in Caribbean and other Ethnic households....and even then jerk and patty are showing up as main meal.....hardly the items you need flatware for!

I think Oprah always wanted to dive in with both hands and was worried that she might look like a duffus ...so she struck first!

I guess Oprah eats corn, wings, ribs, sandwiches.....just to name a few things....with a knife and fork.

Be that as it may, has Oprah no Indian friends that could have prips har before shi leave, access to Google or even, God forbid, visited an Indian restaurant ?

It's a good thing she never went to an Ethiopian's home and saw them mopping up everything with Injera. Would she have insulted them too ?

Anyway, everyone is too thin skinned these days. Any Indians who were insulted need to get a life.

She did not know it was universal and most likely did not expect it of seemingly Westernized Indians.
I submit that many of us would when take the Oprah factor out of it react in a similar many.
Oprah and many Americans are well used to seeing folks chow down with their bare hands....right here in the USA.
I had a Mexican/USA GF and attend many <span style="font-style: italic">(not every....that why she broke up with me)</span>, weekly gatherings. There was the cooking knife, cooking fork.....the serving spoon, plates and <span style="font-weight: bold">little else</span>.

most likely the real hoopla a come from the fact that she showed how life was in the slums. and that the well off family had so many servants (who themselves probably live in the slums)

I remember once I ate with Mr Skells uncle down in FL an di man ask we if we wanted some choka (tomatoes wid spices)...we seh yes..him tek him han inna di bowl an jus slop it pan we plate..I was horrified ..di man look pan mi wid dose &quot;jus eat it&quot; eyes...we did...an we neva dedd nor get running a di belly doah mi stomach was feeling quite uneasy dat day

This is proper knife and fork use (Continental) and it was standard in Jamaica during our parent's day.

I must confess, I have switched over to the North American way but apparently I was taught the proper way. Too much time around Canadians and I switched to their way of doing things. I am trying to switch back but habits die hard.

I don't know about the US but it was one time part of the Canadian school curriculum curriculum to teach young ladies how to set a proper tea table, serve tea and take care of tea towels. I have completely forgotten this but we did practice a lot. I assume this was also taught in Jamaica.
