As u three are in my opinion (along with tuffy) the most sophisticated, knowleage people I know in terms of history art poltics.....but u watched the opening ceromony.

I was listening to a BBC radio 4 program and it was mentioned by the talking heads it was included.. ( it was a program that the heads were that they thought the history was dealt with well, though the lady was compalining that about myth vs history)

During the bit where Britain transformed from Agrarian to Industrial....when dem was moving all the landscape off the field so di smokestacks could come up...u see the suffragettes etc....

been trying to find footage of the ceremony but its either pixellated or not viewable from here in canada.

watching the ceremony made me realize i know more of british history than is probably good for me.

...yep, they had a scene depicting the 1936 Jarrow marchers and there was a moment of silence that broke the noise and clamour, to remember those who sacrificed their lives for Britain's industrial rise.

aint dat the truth ...i did A'level history from unification of Germany etal to modern times ...so u know how much European history i have washing about...to this day i love books on that era....coupled wid dat we had to do W.I.history simultaneously....dat history syllabus nearly bus mi shut..all dem dates fi both Europe n di WI fi all dem essays...mercy.....no wonda mi memba it all

last month there was a series on Radio about the unification of Germany... the rise of Prussia... Fredrick the Great ect... it was a surprising.. I I read the text book from A'levels, Europe Since Napoleon... but it was dry....the radio series made me want ot investigate further....

ONE of the texts i used for A'Levels.....memba Bismarck etc in unification of Prussia/Germany....memories...wat strikes me today is that we just bought the outgoing upper Sixth class texts once we got our O'level results n chose our A'level subjects......now i wonder how behind the texts were...but for that early period there was not much we were missing....did King Lear n Henry IV Pt 1, a Conrad novel n T S Elliot's poems for A'Level literature plus Economics....three subjects that meant nuff reading n essays..n of course u had to do G.P. more essays....

U did smart...

Fledg gave me his copies of Europe since Napoleon and From Columbus to Castro.. Both text for A'levels.... I just read them not for exams.... so I am no expert.

But one of the things that struck me from then till now is not only the reunification of Germany and Bismark..... But the unification of Italy... the unification force of the Astro Hungerian Empire... (Mettinichs comment that Italy is a geographic accident is one of the quotes I remember from that book)

Yet over the years I have heard black nationalist defending the divisiveness of inter community strife in Africa and the weakness of the central african states.... . Yet each time they singularly fail to point out that european nations are less than 200 years old... indeed united Kingdom was only formed in 1808 and most of ireland recidened in the 1920;s Scotland wants to break free...Garvey pointed alot of this out...

Germany was post napoleon construct, Yugoslavia is the history of Europe... indeed one of the comments of the talking heads on the program of the rise of germany.. when asked when was Germany united commeted 1989 at the fall of the Berlin wall. And Admitted that she thought Berliners were unsophisticated war mongers.. Germany was a collection of over 200 statelets.. the border between Europe was the most stable between 1945 and 1989....

i bought a copy of both those books u mentioned last time i was in JA...funny how Williams is not remembered more.....but den i don't read Trini papers as a muss.....just to read fi leisure ....also the Making of the West Indies (Augier) n couple others we had used....to this day i can guote Lear , Macbeth n even Elliot...concur re Metternich vs African States.....dese days i find i am regressing in my reading...am going in for regency period books..go figga....age n second childhood.....

I had a copy of &quot;the makings....&quot; Remeber the Battle of Jenkins Ear... one of my favourite thats.. I actually wanted to vist Utrecht... because of that treaty!!!! Every time I meet a dutch person I asked them if they are from there... Last year I met a dutch expert in energy who was a professor from there... He thought I was strange when I said I wanted to go there!


Williams was a giant as a academic.. Not sure as a poltician!!! but his vision of the west indies is not one that is in sync with the curretn status quo. He was imho opnion the Hegilian Synthesis of our history.. Not the popular black nationalist.... He played some moves on the Black Power movement... Fled last book was about his early poltics....

It is unpopular to admit thinking all history is important...Garvey was incredibly knowelegable about it even European.... So was Dr Williams!

I think Shakespeare the Italian migrant to England was a brilliant playrite, indeed the greatest......Cant find his comedies funny though!!!! Love his history plays... Hamlet, that monologue I can watch over and over again!, I ended up having a discussion on them with a 19 year old girl from kingston on Facebook couple months back... So if u enjoy Elliot &quot;Wasteland&quot; more power to it.... Chinua Achebe likes them as well as Wole Solikya!

I love the Flashman series....I want to re-read the, makes interesting reading of the Victorian Era most extracted from Punch!!! So if u like Elliot..enjoy Elliot!
