Jamaica is not independent so why de big hooplah, waste a big BIG money while nuff ppl a suffah? How dem find all dis money , but cyaan find money fi needed tings?

Di same could be said for Haiti whe had dem "Carnival of Flowers". Dem needed di distraction fi momentatily tek dem mind offa dem problems, an put ah smile pan dem face, if even fi ah little while.

I can ongle speak from my experience. Di poverty did not just start for som of us, and having been on both sides of di fence growing up in JA (split parents on each side of dat fence). I can tell yuh dat during mi early years wid mi mother wen tings was very rough, in areas like TrenchTown, and Four Roads wi still look forward to di holidays and celebrations, even though di communities did not hav much to spend on such. There were some free stuff you could go to and enjoy yuhself for ah likkle while. Yuh even had ah reduction in some crime during those period, where yuh actually felt ah likkle safer. Robbery would go up elsewhere, but murder would go down in the neighbourhood. Politicians, would also come gi dem likkle token gifts. For people who noh hav nutten, those times meant ah lot. It meant ah brief escape into fantasy land. Yeah, I have come a long way, but still remember some of those bitter-sweet memories.

Man will never be truly free. The only way that would come close is if you go live in the wilderness and have no contact with the outside world. Where there is man there is greed, there is injustice, there is exploitation. It is as much a part of the human experience as is breathing.

At least the celebrations provide a little relief from the daily grind as Jkid seh.

It not dat clear-cut. He was also struggling to build a life in di early days, and provided wen him could. Wen yuh ketch ah jab, or day-wuk an it dun, it could bi weeks or months before yuh linkup another. Dem was both living wid different partners, but he always came around and we also went to see him. After a few years wi ended up living wid him permanently.

The hidden hand has won the battle whenever we think that humanity is incapable of improvement...that it is just natural and the oppressed masses should just suffer patiently and celebrate giddily whenever the state tells us there is reason to do so..
Celebration is great but should be tempered with real discussion about what independence means and analyze whether it has been truly achieved...
We've been heavy on the celebration part and extremely light-weight on the analytical aspect
