$36,000 -income level 10% tax on expat earnings to be levied

The income level on which the proposed 10 per cent expat tax in the Cayman Islands will be levied starts at $36,000 .
Premier McKeeva Bush had earlier said the tax would apply to those earning $20,000 and more.
The new figure was disclosed at a public meeting Wednesday evening.
Mr. Bush said the tax would be implemented by 1 September and would be administered by the Immigration Department.
The tax, which Mr. Bush calls a Community Enhancement Fee, will not apply to non-Caymanian permanent residents or to non-Caymanian government employees, the premier clarified
Expat spouses of Caymanians will also be exempt from the tax.
According to the 2010 Census Report, there are approximately 5,875 expatriate workers with salaries over $36,000 per year.
