BLEACHING WAR - Women clash for skin lightening cream
Residents of Denham Town, in west Kingston, say the introduction of a 'new type' of skin lightening cream has sparked fist fights and a rift among women in a section of their community. The women are reportedly accusing each other of spitefully purchasing too much of the commodity.
While police sources laughed before claiming they were not aware of such a situation within the community, residents say the tension among the once dark-skinned women is neither a joke nor a secret.
"Di ooman dem dung yah a war ova bleaching cream!", a 26-year-old female resident who gave her name as Sexy Stacy said when THE WEEKEND STAR visited the community earlier this week.
"Some a di bleachers a complain seh di res' a ooman dem a buy out di cream dem fi spite suh other woman cyaa get fi buy none," she added.
According to residents, the rift began in July when two women visited the premises where the cream is being sold.
One of the women reportedly bought over 20 bags of the cream while the other was subsequently told she had to return the following day as there was none left for sale.
The 'unluckier' of the two women is said to have attempted to strike a deal with the other but when her offer was not taken up, a heated argument reportedly developed before fists, stones and bottles began to fly.
The incident reportedly created tension between two groups of women from the community who are known to invest heavily in skin lightening products.
Residents say both sets of women now pool together and buy exorbitant amounts of the new cream as they constantly try to get back at each other by limiting its availability.
When THE WEEKEND STAR visited the shop, which sells the cream, the proprietor, who strongly requested anonymity at first, boasted about coming up with the idea for the cream which he says is in high demand, but of low supply.
He said he simply mixed two skin lightening products together to get what he calls the 'real deal'.
"A di real deal mi have, di way di cream bad all di woman dem roun yah a war fi it," he said.
Asked to explain why the women would fight over the cream, the shopkeeper said it all boils down to both groups of women having a long-standing issue with each other and as such are always competing.
"Is a set a woman weh always a try outdo each other. Dem know seh di cream work good and fast suh is like di two a dem a try buy it out so di next set cyaa get none fi use cause mi nuh really keep nuff a it at one time," he explained.
This, he said, is the reason behind several recent altercations involving the women.
Meanwhile, residents say though the situation might sound hilarious, it is truly a sad case for women to be behaving in such a manner.
"Look deh eeeh, a 50 years of Independence Jamaica a celebrate but still woman a fight cause dem want cream fi bleach out," one resident said, when asked for his take on the matter.
