((Peasie)) Cycling Events in Velodrome

The only trophy I ever received was for cycling but I HATE THE VELODROME EVENTS!! Canadian TV a KILL wi wid dem. I thought this was the SUMMER Olympics. Where is the outdoor cycling?

Finally the great cycling events. I am enjoying the BMX and looking forward to the mountain biking. Why don't we compete in this? This is more like it.

My adult son loves the velodrome events and all cycle sports. Me? I like most athletic events and, for the few that I don't like, I merely leave the room or just switch channels.

That's the approach I have to life these days.

This brings back memories. Before my son came along, I had no interest in sports. I took him to kindersports for exercise and fun. When he was 3 I signed him up for Little Tykes soccer so that, when he visited Jamaica, he would be able to play comfortably with his cousins and the other children. I eventually got into horse riding and he kept begging me for riding lessons. So, at 7 he started riding. Of course he was MUCH better than I am and he was cantering and doing showjumping when I was still a nervous Nellie.

As he grew older he started watching sports on TV. We would watch the showjumping together. The only sport I discouraged was the basketball ...I felt the players were much too macho the way the strut around and grab the hoops. Once he was watching and the guys were grabbing the hoops. I let him know this was very dangerous and that he should never try it. Even switched the channel.

Sure enough, a month later, he had an accident. The teacher was out of the room and the boys were taking turns jumping from the stage in the gym to grab the basketball hoop. None of the other boys could do it. Sure enough, my son did it successfully. He wasn't satisfied enough to do it once. He had to try again. Lost his grip....landed on his neck and couldn't move for a minute. So, it was a trip to the emergency room and back and forth to Sick Kids for tests.

At age 8 he asked to play hockey. I was surprised and asked if he really wanted to do it. I let him know of hockey's reputation for racism and the problems one of his older cousins had had. He really wanted to play so we let him. He has never had even the slightest problem in hockey.

Our house is not big enough for me to just go to another room. I mean I could go to the backyard but who wants to do that in winter or to the office and work but who wants to work all the time.

So, I would watch with him. Between taking him to his games and practices and watching sports and the Olympics on TV, something interesting happened, I became interested in sports. Now, even though he is not home in the summer, I am watching the Olympics...funny how these things work. So pull up beside him on the couch Peasie and give him a big hug. They grow up much too fast and man watching the Olympics without my son is just not the same. I miss him and I hope he comes for a visit before school starts again.
