I also believe my own eyes. I am constantly seeing Black men with white and even Asian women. I go for weeks.....sometimes MONTHS without seeing a Black woman with a White man.

When I travel to Europe and Asia I see a much more level playing field.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Four Myths About Black Marriage
Setting the Record Straight</span>

Is marriage for white people? That question has been asked in one form or another in a series of news reports about the black marriage “crisis.” On the surface, such stories seem to be concerned about black women in search of love, but these media reports have largely served to fuel stereotypes about African Americans. Moreover, by suggesting that too few black men are available to wed, news stories on black marriage have done little more than predict doom and gloom for African-American women who hope to marry. In reality, black marriage isn’t reserved for the likes of Barack and Michelle Obama. Analysis of census data and other figures has debunked much of the misinformation floating around in the media about the black marriage rate.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Black Women Don’t Marry</span>

The barrage of news reports about the black marriage rate gives the impression that African-American women’s chances of walking down the aisle are bleak. A Yale University study found that just 42 percent of black women are married, and a variety of high profile news networks such as CNN and ABC picked that figure up and ran with it. But researchers Ivory A. Toldson of Howard University and Bryant Marks of Morehouse College question the accuracy of this finding. “The often-cited figure of 42 percent of black women never marrying includes all black women 18 and older,” Toldson told the Root.com. “Raising this age in an analysis eliminates age groups we don't really expect to be married and gives a more accurate estimate of true marriage rates.”

Toldson and Marks found that 75 percent of black women marry before they turn age 35 after examining census data from 2005 to 2009. Moreover, black women in small towns have higher marriage rates than white women in urban centers such as New York and Los Angeles, Toldson remarked in the New York Times.


<span style="font-weight: bold">Educated Black Women Have it Harder</span>

Getting a college degree is just about the worst thing a black woman can do if she wants to get married, right? Not exactly. News stories about black marriage often mention that more black women pursue higher education than black men—by a 2-to-1 ratio according to some reports. But what these pieces leave out is that white women also earn college degrees more than white men do, and this gender imbalance hasn’t hurt white women’s chances at matrimony. What’s more, black women who finish college actually improve their chances of marrying rather than lower them. “Among black women, 70 percent of college graduates are married by 40, whereas only about 60 percent of black high school graduates are married by that age,” Tara Parker-Pope of the New York Times reported. The same trend is at play for black men. In 2008, 76 percent of black men with a college degree married by age 40. In contrast, only 63 percent of black men with just a high school diploma tied the knot. So education increases the likelihood of marriage for both African-American men and women. Moreover, Toldson points out that black women with college degrees are more likely to marry than white female high school dropouts.


<span style="font-weight: bold">Rich Black Men Marry Out</span>

Black men drop black women as soon as they reach a certain level of success, don’t they? While plenty of rap stars, athletes and musicians may choose to date or marry interracially when they achieve fame, the same is not true for the bulk of successful black men. By analyzing census data Toldson and Marks found that 83 percent of married black men who earned at least $100,000 annually got hitched to black women. The same is the case for educated black men of all incomes. Eighty-five percent of black male college graduates married black women. Generally, 88 percent of married black men (no matter their income or educational background) have black wives. This means that interracial marriage should not be held responsible for the singleness of black women.


<span style="font-weight: bold">Black Men Don’t Earn as Much as Black Women</span>

Just because black women are more likely to graduate from college than their male counterparts doesn’t mean that they out-earn black men. Actually, black men are more likely than black women to bring home at least $75,000 annually. Plus, double the number of black men than women make at least $250,000 annually. Because of pervasive gender gaps in income, black men remain the breadwinners in the African-American community.

These numbers indicate that there are more than enough financially successful black men to go around for black women. Of course, not every black woman is looking for a breadwinner. Not every black woman is even seeking marriage. Some black women are happily single. Others are gay, lesbian or bisexual and unable to legally wed those they love. For heterosexual black women in search of marriage, however, the forecast is not nearly as gloomy as has been portrayed in the media.

TODAY women earn almost 60 percent of all bachelor’s degrees and more than half of master’s and Ph.D.’s. Many people believe that, while this may be good for women as income earners, it bodes ill for their marital prospects.

As Kate Bolick wrote in a much-discussed article in The Atlantic last fall, American <span style="font-weight: bold">women face “a radically shrinking pool of what are traditionally considered to be ‘marriageable’ men — those who are better educated and earn more than they do.” </span>

Educated women worry that they are scaring away potential partners, and pundits claim that those who do marry will end up with unsatisfactory matches. They point to outdated studies suggesting that women with higher earnings than their husbands do more housework to compensate for the threat to their mates’ egos, and that men who earn less than their wives are more likely to experience erectile dysfunction.

Is this really the fate facing educated heterosexual women: either no marriage at all or a marriage with more housework and less sex? Nonsense. That may have been the case in the past, but no longer. For a woman seeking a satisfying relationship as well as a secure economic future, there has never been a better time to be or become highly educated.

For more than a century, women often were forced to choose between an education and a husband. Of women who graduated from college before 1900, more than three-quarters remained single. As late as 1950, one-third of white female college graduates ages 55 to 59 had never married, compared with only 7 percent of their counterparts without college degrees.

Some of these women chose to stay single, of course, and that choice has always been easier and more rewarding for educated women. <span style="font-weight: bold">But the low marriage rates of educated women in the past were also because of the romantic and sexual prejudices of men. </span>One physician explained the problem in Popular Science Monthly in 1905: An educated woman developed a “self-assertive, independent character” that made it “impossible to love, honor and obey” as a real wife should. He warned that as more middle-class women attended college, middle-class men would look to the lower classes to find uneducated wives.

That is exactly what happened in the mid-20th century. From 1940 to the mid-1970s, the tendency for men to marry down educationally became more pronounced and the cultural ideal of hypergamy — that women must marry up — became more insistent.


<span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-size: 17pt">African-American women are less likely to marry than white women overall, but educated black women are considerably more likely to marry than their less-educated counterparts. In 1967, the boundaries were still very black and white. The film &quot;Guess Who's Coming to Dinner,&quot; about an interracial couple and their parents' angst, was considered groundbreaking.

Fast forward four decades and you don't have to look to the big screen to see interracial couples. You can see the beginnings of a melting pot everywhere -- just look at celebrity couples like Seal and Heidi Klum, or Tony Parker and Eva Longoria.

And new study by the Pew Research Center found that one in six new marriages in the U.S. are interracial relationships. That makes the United States one of the most colorblind countries when it comes to saying &quot;I do,&quot; second only to Brazil.

<span style="font-size: 14pt">Only 9 percent of black women, on the other hand, married outside their race, making them the least likely of any race or gender to marry outside their race and the least likely to get married at all.

Typically, Banks notes, the more educated a woman, the more likely she will marry. But that’s not so with African-American women. They’re dealing with a shortage of potential male partners, which Banks surmises is caused by a high incarceration rate, interracial marriage and economic trends that have benefited women more than men (and that are much more pronounced among African-Americans).
By his logic, the first family is unique in a way I didn’t appreciate before reading the book. Regarding the Obamas, Banks writes: “As African-Americans, they are extraordinary in the most ordinary way: They are a married couple raising their children together.”
Banks’ work was an eye-opener, and probably the sort of dissertation on a touchy subject best coming from someone within the community. Where many, including Obama himself, have exhorted black men to assume greater responsibility for their children and the state of the African-American family, Banks sheds rare light on the equally significant plight of black women. Their problem isn’t so much frequent pregnancy as a dearth of appropriate partners.

Panic over single black women is unfounded. Two black scholars have the numbers to prove it.


<span style="font-weight: bold">When it comes to marriage in the African-American community, two black scholars have a message: The mainstream media's analysis is divisive and defeatist. We're slammed with panic-inducing statistics because fear sells. And we need to stop buying into it.</span>

Their research, recently published in Empower Magazine, is an answer to the onslaught of gloom-and-doom news about black women's struggles to find black mates. You know, the coverage that's oozing with desperation and grounded in seemingly alarming numbers. Take a Washington Post piece from 2006:

In the Washington area, there are 83 single black men for every hundred single black women ... For Robyn and black women like her -- who see their fates intimately bound to black men -- life means strategizing and dreaming beyond the numbers in a world where it seems the ground has shifted under their feet.

If that wasn't enough melodrama to make you want to go watch Waiting to Exhale while commiserating with Asian men and researching adoption, there was the December 2009 ABC News/Nightline story &quot;Single, Black, Female -- and Plenty of Company.&quot; And during the April 2010 &quot;Nightline Face-Off: Why Can't a Successful Black Woman Find a Man?&quot; &quot;expert&quot; comedians and commentators set up a blame game between the genders.

<span style="font-weight: bold">After the alarms about the &quot;crisis&quot; sounded, the headline-grabbing solutions rolled in. In a Washington Post piece, an author urged black women to save themselves by dating men of other races.</span> Ralph Richard Banks has proposed the same fix to the &quot;black marriage dilemma&quot; in his upcoming book, &quot;Is Marriage for White People?&quot;

<span style="font-weight: bold">The coverage of this issue is excessive, and the tone and content can be unproductive. That's clear. But we can't question the alarming statistics that drive the discussion. Right?

Actually, we can</span>. Enter Ivory A. Toldson, Ph.D., a Howard University professor and research analyst for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation; and Bryant Marks, a psychology professor at Morehouse College and faculty associate at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Eye rolling over the excessive efforts to stir up panic over black marriage is nothing new. But these two have the expertise -- and, more important, the incentive -- to challenge the very assumptions that drive the discussion. They've looked at the same old data (from the census and American Community Surveys), but through a different lens. It's one that's not set on manufacturing a catastrophic picture of black people and marriage.</span> In fact, they consider it a personal mission to do the opposite.

Toldson and Marks say that<span style="font-weight: bold"> the statistics about single black women and &quot;undesirable&quot; black men have been intentionally presented in the worst-possible light. </span> Their work -- they call it &quot;myth busting&quot; -- tells a different story.

But their independent analysis of American Community Surveys data from 2000 to 2009 shows that among black women 35 and older, the percentage that have never been married drops to 25 percent, meaning that a solid majority (75 percent) of black women get married before they turn 35.

&quot;Educated&quot; doesn't have to mean &quot;alone.&quot; The researchers also take on the claim that &quot;marriage chances for highly educated black women&quot; are grim. While the numbers may be different in other urban areas, at least in the two major cities Toldson and Marks examined, education significantly increased a woman's chances of tying the knot.

In Washington, D.C., 36 percent of those with only a high school diploma, 47 percent of those with a college degree, 59 percent of those with a master's or professional degree and 62 percent of those with doctoral degrees are married. There's a similar pattern in Atlanta. So much for having to choose between a diploma (or four) and a husband.

The ratio of unmarried black women to black men is not dismal. Toldson recalls talking to three women in Atlanta who offered up three different black male-to-female ratios for the city: 1-to-10, 1-to-17 and 1-to-22. &quot;No one could tell me the origins of these numbers, so I decided to do some research and figure out where they were coming from,&quot; he says.

&quot;I analyzed the census data, and even when I used the strictest criteria, I still wasn't getting above 1-to-2. The artificial ratios are just floating around out there. I want people to understand that [that ratio] is still not easy for you -- I'll concede that -- but it's not anything absurd.&quot;

<span style="font-weight: bold">There are more &quot;successful&quot; black men than you think. </span> Toldson and Marks respond to the claim that, based on the percentages of those who are without a high school diploma, unemployed or incarcerated, nearly half of all black men in America are unworthy of marriage because of their socioeconomic characteristics.

For this statement to be true, they point out, there would have to be zero overlap in those categories. That obviously isn't the case (70 percent of high school dropouts serve time in prison). The researchers also challenge the idea that there aren't enough &quot;successful&quot; black men for the women who want them.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Yes, black women have outpaced black men in receiving degrees since the 1960s. But more black men than black women still earn more than $75,000 a year, and black men are twice as likely to earn more than $250,000. Toldson says that we should look more broadly at success among black males, acknowledging that education doesn't necessarily determine income. The result is a picture of the number of available &quot;successful&quot; black men that's much less dim .

Not all &quot;successful&quot; black men marry women of other races. To challenge what they call the &quot;cultural myth&quot; that successful black men are likely to be unavailable to black women because they prefer to marry outside their race, Toldson and Marks point out that among married black men with a personal income above $100,000, 83 percent have black wives. Among married black men with college degrees, 85 percent have black wives. Toldson cautions against exaggerating a behavior that we might see as negative, when in reality it occurs a small percentage of the time.</span>

Their findings come with a <span style="font-weight: bold"> call to action: First, scrutinize the agenda of the media. &quot;Entrepreneurial elements of America have found a variety of creative ways to benefit financially from black females' anxieties at the expense of black male egos,&quot;</span> Toldson says. &quot;If you can show somebody that there is a really devastating problem, they'll pay more attention to you. If you have something that you think will correct the problem, they'll pay attention to that.&quot; Think Ralph Richard Banks and his book on the &quot;interracial fix&quot; for black marriage. &quot;He's not going to show you any evidence to the contrary because he wants his book to be bought,&quot; Toldson says.

Second, aim to <span style="font-weight: bold"> keep the dialogue positive. &quot;Marriage between black women and black men is an issue right now. We're not pretending it's not an issue, and we really do need to have a healthy discussion about that,&quot; Toldson concedes. But he blames the tenor of the media-fueled dialogue for making things worse, and encourages us to structure debates in a way that does not denigrate black men or dispirit black women.</span>

<span style="font-weight: bold"> Finally, the researchers ask us to rid ourselves of a &quot;black equals bad&quot; mentality. &quot;We believe negative things about ourselves more than other people believe negative things about themselves,&quot; Toldson told The Root. &quot;People put things out there without any perspective. And as black people, we accept that. We operate under the assumption that if it's black, it's negative, but if you take an unbiased look at the data, you'll often find that things aren't as bad for black people as they think, and you'll also find some things that are positive</span>
