Tropi, a large percentage of what the government of Quebec spends every year comes from outside the province in the form of equalization payments. Much of the rest of Canada is propping up this poor excuse for a province. Then when the rest of Canada goes their to live or visit they do not want to make ANY accommodation in the way of language. I think of the people in Alberta who send $8 billion a year to Quebec and for what?

Lucien Bouchard, the former premier of Quebec had it right when he said &quot;Canada is not a real country&quot;. It will never be a real country until Quebec goes its own way IMHO.

The province of Quebec is use to holding the threat of separation over the heads of Canadians to get what they want (preferential treatment) and it has worked. Quebec gets the most of any province in the way of equalization payments and it is way out ahead of what any other province gets. Way out ahead! No other province even comes remotely close to receiving what Quebec gets.

Well that threat of separation does not work any longer. Remember the big rally that they had in Montreal on the eve of the last referendum, people form all across the country made their way to Quebec to try and persuade the voters to vote NO. Well if there is a next referendum, thee will also be a huge rally, but this time Canadians will travel to Montreal to urge voters to vote YES, just because much of the rest of Canada sees Quebec for what it really is, the freeloading relative with a sense of entitlement that refuses to leave your home and go his own way.

There is something I think you are missing. There is a problem with people who are racist but won't admit it (MANY Canadians). They are tripping over themselves to prove they are not prejudiced that anyone can hold anything over their heads.

Here is an example...when has England defeated any foreign power in a wat and allowed them to keep their language, religion and culture....if the population was not White. Trust me, after the Battle of the Plains of Abraham (which took all of 15 minutes as General Montcalm was caught off guard), the only reason the French were permitted to keep their language, religion and culture is because they are White.

I feel a SERVES THEM RIGHT coming on.

You make a very good point. Although Britian no get affected no way. But the whole thing has come back to bite the rest of Canada in the backside.

Did you know that up until relatively recently French workers were paid less from English for the same jobs? I know for a fact that Black Jamaican students who were hired part-time at some retail outlets were paid more than permanent FT French staff. The French workers were also not given regular pay increases but the English were. They have a lot of legitimate grievances.

He consulted with a lawyer and then immediately fired Marsh, who had been with the company for four years.

&quot;I think he thought that social networking posts were private matters, but in fact, they're not,&quot; D'Astous said. &quot;When you cross the line so clearly, like in this situation, and you associate yourself not just with your person but with your employer, that's totally unacceptable.&quot;

Marsh has since shut down his Facebook page, but he may yet face charges for uttering a threat against Marois. &quot;We investigate as soon as we get a report... and if charges can be filed, they will be filed,&quot; said Sûreté du Québec Lieutenant Guy Lapointe, who noted that this isn't the only case of online threats the SQ is looking into. &quot;People on their Facebook are posting all sorts of things and they're not thinking of the consequences.&quot;

When I arrived here Saturday, I had never even heard of her. Now she is Premier of Quebec.

The job she had held since 2007 was the one she had aspired to for most of her 30-year career in provincial politics. She lost a leadership bid in 1985, early in her career. She lost again in 2005 to André Boisclair, who would lead the party to its worst-ever election loss.

Seemingly unable to staunch the bleeding, the backstabbing, the mutiny, Marois thought about quitting.<span style="font-size: 14pt"> <span style="font-weight: bold">Now a multi-millionaire thanks to her land developer husband, Claude Blanchet, life as a retiree in their pastoral home in the Charlevoix region, north of Quebec City, would have been pleasant.</span>

Then she thought again.

An election was approaching, likely within the year. Scandals involving the Liberal government were multiplying. This would be her one chance to become Quebec’s first female premier and the leader of the province’s aspirations for independence.

Early this year, Marois assembled big-thinking sovereigntists to turn a slate of sometimes unwieldy or overly ambitious Parti Québécois promises into government policy for the weeks and months after she took power. Others prepared the election campaign.

Then the politician with a penchant for flashy clothes made the decision to overhaul her wardrobe. Her combinations over the course of the election campaign included a cream-coloured, knee-length dress coupled with a silky black smock, and an aqua-blue dress combined with a white jacket.

The muted ensembles would ensure the voters were focused squarely on her words and not distracted by her earrings, necklaces or colourful shirts.

Exempted from the new clothing regime, though, were Marois’ shoes.

Shoes are a lifelong passion for Marois, she explained in an extensive article published in the news magazine L’Actualite last month. Raised in a home where money was tight, but always ready when it was time to pay school tuition fees, Marois relied on her pumps, wedges and heels to bring her level with the girls of more comfortable means.

Her favourite this summer was a pair more suited to the heat than patent leather, good for walking the streets of swing ridings and shaking the hands of electors — open-toed baby-blue canvas wedges with swirls of yellow and gold and a girlie blue bow.

It was her only show of frivolity in a determined march to the minority government result she achieved Tuesday night, demonstrating that the girl is alive and well inside one of Canada’s most experienced politicians.

There are few better-known commodities in provincial politics than the PQ leader.

Marois entered Quebec politics through the backroom as an aide to ministers in René Lévesque’s maiden PQ government, elected in 1976. Lévesque persuaded her to run in the 1981 election at the age of 32. It was more of a waddle, but that was enough. Eleven days after victory, she gave birth to her second child. Six days after that, Marois was sworn in as minister responsible for the condition of women.

She has occupied offices in an astonishing 13 other ministries over the years, including health, finance and education.

It was in that latter role in 1997 that Marois created the province’s sacred and much-envied $5-a-day daycare program (now $7-a-day). It is, she says, one of her proudest achievements.

Despite her experience, Marois came across as careful on the campaign trail, perhaps even nervous at the prospect that she would fall short of her final chance to win power for her party after almost a decade on the opposition side of the National Assembly.</div></div>

Marois says she will concentrate on the parts of her platform where she can find majority support, though she insists she will put forward a new French-first language law that prevents francophone students from studying at English CEGEPS and insists on the use of French in small businesses.

Those expecting division and confrontation may be upset, says PQ deputy Bernard Drainville.

“She is a woman of consensus,” said the former Radio-Canada television journalist, who quit to run in the 2007 Quebec election.

“I think she’s very well placed to govern Quebec in a situation like this one.”

The promise/menace of a third referendum is, for now, a mathematical and political impossibility. But the job of building on the initial election night victory will be followed by the job of winning a majority government the next time around.

The goal of a country called Quebec is not dead, just dormant.</div></div>

There are the two solitudes. Why pretend we can co-exist? Why does a person working for the Federal government in Toronto or Vancouver need to know French when clearly if they spoke Mandarin it would probably be more practical?

I am talking about history....this happened in the past and it is one of the reasons for resentment. French text on packaging always used to be much smaller than English text. So, Quebec has turned the tables.

Anyway, an update:

The accused killer who allegedly ruined the Parti Quebecois election-night celebration is speaking out from his jailhouse — just as the new government is being sworn in.
Montreal radio station CJAD is reporting that Richard Henry Bain phoned its newsroom today from his prison infirmary to say that he believes the city should separate from the province.
It says they interviewed him for half an hour, but chose to only run a brief snippet of the interview on the air.
In a clip that aired, Bain is heard sharing his view that Montreal should separate from the rest of Quebec and become its own province because that would help ensure greater peace between anglophones and francophones.
The radio station says Bain placed the call without his lawyer's knowledge.
The businessman faces a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting that took place only metres from where PQ premier-elect Pauline Marois was giving her victory speech.
One man was killed and another was wounded in the election-night shooting.
Marois was sworn in today as the 30th premier of Quebec — and is the very first woman to hold the job in that province.
The 62-year-old Bain also faces 15 other charges — including three counts of attempted murder and arson in the attack outside the Montreal nightclub.
Bain's next court appearance is set for Oct. 11.
