Woman killed, hubby injured in St Elizabeth attack

SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth – Gunmen disrupted the peace and quiet of the farming community of Tryall, adjacent to Ballards Valley in South East St Elizabeth late yesterday, leaving a woman dead and her husband hospitalised.
The dead woman has been identified by police as Hopie Powell, a 40 year-old farmer and vendor of Bromfield Town, Tryall, while her injured husband, Steve Powell, 45, also a farmer and vendor, is in hospital.
Police reports are that the two had returned home in their pick-up truck from the Claremont market in St Ann where they have been doing business for years, when they saw men in their yard.
Powell attempted to reverse from the yard but the gunmen opened fire hitting Mrs Powell in the abdomen and chest, while her husband was shot near the mouth.
Police say an undisclosed sum of money was taken from the couple.

When I read things like this I realize that all my dreams of someday retiring in Jamaica (at least for part of the year) have vanished. Not worth it!

My sympathies to this poor man for the loss of his wife.

My heart leapt when I Santa Cruz. My Dad's best man retired there from the UK with his wife and their house has been robbed countless times. Fortunately they have not suffered any bodily harm.

I feel so bad for the Powell's. The report doesn't mention surviving family members, but they must have children.

lots of retirees from england in my district near santa cruz. havent heard of robberies, mostly because, i'm guessing, they are living among family. even so, there is a man who returned from England and opened a guest house, and seems to be thriving - havent heard of him being robbed.

I feel bad when any Jamaican gets killed but a farmer and higgler. Not a good sign when they start killing off these folks.

there are too few Jamaicans on the planet... But to me Farmers and Higglers are the highest and most honourably congealers of labour in our country.. Like the musicians they have a long time been not invested in despite the fact they are those who add real value rather than take value....It is a hard life for us sons of the soil.....I still see myself as a farmer....
