Legendary crooner Andy Williams dies at 84 :(

Sad news to report from the music world: Legendary singer Andy Williams died Tuesday night.

His spokesman tells Lifeline Live that Williams died after a year-long battle with bladder cancer. He was 84.

Williams, who was one of the most popular vocalists of the 1960s as well as an avid golfer, died at home in Branson, Mo., where he owns the Moon River Theatre. Moon River -- by Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini -- was one of Williams' signature songs. On Twitter, fans are saying farewell to our "huckleberry friend."

"The old cliche says that if you can remember the 1960s, you weren't there," the singer once recalled. "Well, I was there all right, but my memory of them is blurred -- not by any drugs I took but by the relentless pace of the schedule I set myself."

Said Kathie Lee Gifford on Today this morning: "He had perhaps the most beautiful male voice ever. Perfect pitch."

Williams was also well-known in the 1970s and '80s for his Christmas television specials. Known for his affable, easygoing personality, he hosted the Grammys, the Golden Globes and the People's Choice Awards numerous times.

The crooner is survived by his wife, Debbie, and his three children, Robert, Noelle and Christian. Williams had the children with French-born dancer Claudine Longet. They divorced in 1975, and the following year she was charged with fatally shooting her boyfriend, alpine ski racer Spider Sabich, in Aspen.<span style="font-weight: bold"> Williams made headlines as he stood by her side throughout the public trial. </span> He married Debbie Meyer in 1991.

She insisted the gun accidentally went off while Sabich was showing her how to use it.

According to reports in Time magazine at the time, Williams defended his ex-wife, who was charged with reckless manslaughter, in the press and even accompanied her to court proceedings. A jury found her guilty of criminal negligence, a lesser charge, and she was fined and sentenced to 30 days in jail.

The Paris-born Longet, who later married her defense attorney, had appeared in several films and TV series in the 1970s.</div></div>

None of this was in any way his fault except for the mistake that so many successful men make of selecting their wives with the<span style="font-size: 14pt"> <span style="font-weight: bold">wrong</span> </span>head.

Still while they were together she was modest in her apparral and demeanour and she clearly had talent.

For many Americans, Christmas just wasn't Christmas without Andy Williams, dressed in his trademark sweater, looking out from the TV set as he sang &quot;It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.&quot;

That song, specially written for &quot;The Andy Williams Show,&quot; became a staple of the singer's annual Christmas specials. In 2009, it was ranked at No. 5 on Billboards' &quot;Top 10 Holiday Songs (Since 2001).&quot; It also came in No. 4 on ASCAP's 2010 countdown of holiday songs receiving the most radio.


The annual Christmas TV specials, which featured the entire Williams family, grew out his weekly &quot;The Andy Williams Show&quot; on NBC. The specials continued even after the show ended in 1972, and the last aired some time in the 1990s.

&quot;The show I always enjoyed doing above all others was the Christmas show, and it was the one that the audiences loved the most, too,&quot; Williams wrote in his 2009 memoir, &quot;Moon River and Me.&quot; &quot;It always had the highest ratings of the entire season. To this day people stop me on the street and tell me how much they cherished the Christmas shows and how much it meant to their whole family.&quot;

Every November and December, Williams presented the &quot;Andy Williams Christmas Show,&quot; with singers, dancers and musicians, at the Moon River Theater, a 2,054-seat venue he opened in Branson. Mo., in the early 1990s. Plans for this year's event, featuring &quot;American Idol&quot; finalist Katie Stevens, were posted on Williams' website at the time of his death.
