Over 25 thousand cases of child abuse were reported to the Office of the Children's Registry, OCR during the period 2007 to 2011.
The statistics include children who were alleged victims of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, trafficking or child labour.
They also include children with behavioral problems or in need of care and protection.
According to the OCR statistics, most of the sexual offences committed against children in the period were carried out by unknown offenders.
Over two thousand such cases were reported during the five year period.
That figure was followed by over 15 hundred in a category of non relatives of the children.
Of concern however is the figure of more than one thousand boyfriends or girlfriends of the victims showing up as committing offences against under-aged children.
Fathers, stepfathers, stepmothers and mothers also represented a significant number, with 715 mothers and step mothers and 950 fathers and step fathers committing sexual offences against children.
The statistics also show that a significant number of siblings, foster parents, and wards of the state were also alleged offenders.
In the five year period under review reports of sexual abuse were filed on behalf of nearly seven thousand girls and 422 boys.
Alleged offenders against girls also included mothers and stepmothers with 656 cases while 54 fathers or stepfathers were accused of sexually assaulting boys.
Nearly 900 fathers or stepfathers were accused of sexually assaulting girls under their care while 53 mothers and stepmothers faced similar accusations against boys under their care.
The Office of the Children's Registry was established as a provision of the Child Care and Protection Act on January 1, 2007.
