The governing People’s National Party (PNP) emerged this afternoon from a two-day meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC) still refusing to comment on the possibility of sanctions against the jailed Montego Bay Deputy Mayor Michael Troupe and councillor colleague Sylvan Reid.
The party has been facing pressure from the parliamentary opposition and civil society to take action against the men. However, deputy general secretary Julian Robinson says the party is holding firm to its position that justice should be allowed to take its course.
Both Troupe and Reid were taken into custody by members of the anti-lottery scam taskforce in separate operations in St James on Wednesday, last week.
Troupe and his 21-year-old son, Jevaughn were slapped with charges on Friday for illegal possession of a firearm. Troupe has subsequently announced that he will take a leave of absence from his public duties.
Reid has not been charged with any crime and has not stated whether he will resign or take a leave of absence.
Robinson says Troupe’s Granville Division will be managed by a divisional executive committee in his absence.
Speaking to journalists following yesterday’s NEC meeting, the PNP deputy general secretary said no action has been taken in relation to Reid because he has not been charged with a crime.
Reid represents the Salt Spring Division in the St James Parish Council.
Party chairman, Robert Pickersgill today said the division would be looked after if he were charged.
