Greetings from Brooklyn, NY

just completed my first full day here. one more full day tomorrow, then back to TO on Sunday.

Boy, am loving the new Brooklyn culture, not as much dereliction, lovely

tonight saw Garth Fagan dance troupe at BAM, dancing works choreographed to Wynton Marsalis. passed by some bookstore which i learned later to my chagrin, had Ziadie Smith signing books

then my cousin and i had dessert and coffee in a lickle French cafe at the corner of Lafayette and something (i think is Fulton).

tomorrow, it's to the Botanical Gardens for a hispanic fiesta.

Yay Brooklyn!!!

popping in to say howdy. yes, pepps, tekking nuff pictures. hope to start posting them sunday after i reach home. went to farmer's market this morning at grand sittn sittn, near the brooklyn library, going back out later.

Thursday nite was the big opening of the new stadium that wetty wetty mouth Jayz open, as well as his new club inside the stadium.

mi a guh Newport mall early a mawning and then if mi have any strength leff mi a guh walk out the whola Atlantic Last year one lady did have some slamming jerk

i missed it, unfortunately, and am back in the cold boswams of TO, keeping warm with my brooklyn memories.

in the subway station with my cuz. i'm on the right. we were going to Roosevelt Island to visit a relative, then go to a tourist stop no-one in Brooklyn knew about - the High Line in Manhattan.

in our family, Brooklyn came like how Jamaica was for others - a place for the Canadian kids to go on summer holidays. my mother's twin sister lived there with her four kids, and later, the oldest sister moved there from Jamaica. when i was a teen, i found Brooklyn dirty, noisy, <span style="font-style: italic">poor</span>, and full of strange sounding and loud Americans.

my mother's twin was perpetually anxious, and her anxiety transmitted to me. hole u purse tite unda u awm so nobaddy can grab it. even so, u mite get mug so keep u eyes open. watch di shorts dem u wear. wen u go pan subway, try u best no go near di edge in case smaddy decide fi shove u in front of train. everybody was suspicious, and u couldnt be too careful.

then, she would mek me walk widdar from on subway car to the other while the train moving. i was terrified, but she had no patience for that.

Brooklyn was not my favourite place. and there was no money fi do all the touristy things. the best thing was that at the time mi aunty lived next door to the botanical gardens, and there was a park we used to go there to play or hang out. even when she moved further away, we'd walk there, all the cousins.

my eldest aunt on left, my mother on the right. her twin, the anxious one (but my favouritest aunty despite everything) - she died 5 years ago.

this sign in the subway intrigued me. took me a little while to get it. then i started thinking of dem film from the 50s i guess, that encouraged u to keep an eye out for communists.

hi, Kia yes, loved the highline. mi aunty and cousin thanked me for letting me know about it. one of the people on my team told me about it last year, when she was planning her own NY trip.
