In new case ... 9-Y-O RAPED

Cops arrest accused man yesterday

Hot on the heels of last week's rape of five family members including an eight-year-old girl, a man is now in police custody accused of raping a nine-year-old girl.

Information reaching THE STAR is that yesterday morning, the police got word that the man was in Fletchers Land, Kingston. He was reportedly taken to the Fletchers Land Police Station but ran from the premises. He was chased and held.

The nine-year-old complainant has been taken to the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA). The suspect is reportedly now being held at the Kingston Central police lock-up.

When asked about the incident, cops were tight-lipped about the matter, however, THE STAR understands that the alleged rape happened recently but the accused could not be located. Investigations are ongoing.

Jamaicans were outraged when it was reported that last Monday five females, including an eight-year-old girl, were raped at gunpoint at their home in Irwin Point, St James, by two men who invaded the dwelling.

Two suspects have since been taken into custody for questioning.

A friend said to me that he believes 9 out of 10 Jamaican would attest to being either raped or touched inappropriately at some point in their life. I was thinking more like 5 out of 10. The more you hear the more I am thinking the 90% figure is true.

And these rapes are not a recent phenomenon, but no doubt people turned a blind eye.

I think the number is up there as well. blind eye as well as people accepting it as the norm and a feeling of helplessness.

I mean if law enforcement do nothing when it comes to crimes, where does rape fall on the list (is what some people probably are thinking)

and victims of abuse are likely to continue the cycle

it is not exaggerated...it runs the gamut of men feeling up a female child's budding breasts an pubic mound under the guise of commenting how fat the child growing....as a male u might not have noticed the trend but as a female i damn sure did....an even if u parents were well known, it never stop were frenz from try a ting like dat....as i have said before the one time dis grandfada type who was infamous fi doing dis n people laffing at him, wen he tried it wid my sista she palm a piece a two by four n hit him straight in the balls....i was at the wedding of a family fren , as a 14yrs n was propositioned by the [censored] groom at his wedding....nuff hid behind the' adults must be respected ' or' children must be seen not heard'....parents back den did not discuss sex much less predatory behaviour...but we knew dat if our parents caught a hint especially our fada , hell was gwine to pay...unfortunately i didn't know wat it was suppose to a pattern of behaviour but i did know it was wrong n i was not to countenance such from any man

all when dem KNOW yuh family good good, them still a come with the proposition.

Gen - I personally think, it's always been - always been in existence and widespread; common even. It's just that now, it tends to become known and out in the open, faster and - more wide spread due to changing times, societal changes and technology.

THE rape of five females in Irwin Point, St James, last week has not only shocked Jamaicans.<span style="font-weight: bold"> A group of Germans in the island to film a reggae documentary and music video were so horrified by the incident they have committed their resources to a music project condemining the crime</span>.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Silly Walks Discotheque out of Hamburg, Germany, will also film the visual for the Penthouse Records-produced Stand Against Rape song free of cost</span>. The crew of Joscha Hoffmann, Oliver Schrader and videoman Til Maier arrived in Kingston last Tuesday, one day before the song was recorded.

2.6m
roughly 50-50 split male v female
6 degrees of separation would mean there are 151667 Jamaican males who assaulted females? Of course my calculation is wrong I forgot to determine how many male babies that cannot possible be held responsible for inappropriate contact.
In any case it sounds highly improbable.
But who knows.
A female a year or so older than I once held me at knife point, two older women invited I to their verandah then, assaulted I for not coming on to them, men have made passes (although no touching was involved).

I agree... and although it is decades late - I am glad that it is starting to come to light and action is being taken. It is never too late to turn things around and take a stand. Thank God you and your sister had the good sense to know it is wrong and take a stand. Many young women just feel they have no choice or have been taught all their lives to respect their elders - so much so to the point that they are afraid to speak back to an adult if they know the thing is wrong.
