Death toll from dengue climbs to 66:22 am, Wed October 17, 2012
There has been a further increase in suspected deaths as well as cases of dengue fever in Jamaica.
Information released by the Ministry of Health shows that the number of suspected dengue related deaths has moved from five to six.
A statement from the Ministry yesterday revealed that the number of suspected cases of the mosquito borne disease has risen by more than 200 over the past three weeks.
The figure now stands at one thousand 425 up from one thousand 215 on September 29.
In the meantime, the Health Ministry is urging persons with symptoms of dengue fever to use only paracetamol for treatment as other anti-inflammatory or aspirin containing medications can worsen the problem and may lead to death.
Director of Emergency, Disaster Management and Special Services in the Ministry, Dr. Marion Bullock-DuCasse explained that in severe dengue cases where there is bleeding those types of medication will increase haemorraghing.
Severe symptoms of dengue include continuous pain, cold and clammy skin, bleeding from the nose, mouth and gums, skin bruises, frequent vomiting, difficulty breathing and fainting.
Dr. Bullock DuCasse says persons with these symptoms should immediately visit the nearest health facility.
