A Jamaican reggae artiste is to be deported to the United States (US) from Paraguay to face four-year-old rape and narcotics charges in North Carolina.

CANA News reports that 'Eek-a-Mouse', whose given name is Ripton Hylton, is alleged to have left the US in 2008 after his arrest.

Eek-a-Mouse, who was popular for singles such as “A Wha Do Dem” in the 1980s, maintains that he is innocent. In 2010, he missed a court date in Dare County, North Carolina due to flight cancellations in Europe related to volcanic ash. His lawyer has said the absence was not intentional, however a warrant was issued with a US$1 million bond for failure to appear.

On Thursday police said the reggae artiste was in custody awaiting extradition to North Carolina from Florida. According to investigators, Eek-a-mouse was found in Paraguay on November 21 without a proper visa

Barbara White of Eek-A-Mouse Entertainment Group is now fuming, as she says a US$1 million warrant has been issued for the artiste because he did not appear in court earlier this week.


Eek-a-Mouse, real name Ripton Joseph Hylton, was scheduled to appear in court on Monday to answer to charges against him from 2008.

In that year, he was arrested for the first degree kidnapping of a female, second degree rape and possession of cocaine and marijuana by Kill Devil Hill police department in North Carolina.


However, when his case was called up on Monday, he was a no-show. But White said this was beyond his control.


"They put out a US$1 million arrest warrant. He could not get into the US because they denied his visa application and the airways were closed because of the volcanic ash.

There is no way he could have travelled to the United States," she told THE STAR, noting that the artiste has been on tour in Europe doing shows in places like Sweden, Italy and Germany.


"He is stuck in Amsterdam. He wasn't able to get into the United States so our attorney asked for a motion to continue and they refused."


White further explained that Eek-A-Mouse applied for a US visa in March and found out that the visa was denied in April.
"They informed him that he would not be getting a visa to the US. He applied for a waiver and that was denied.

We don't know why the US denied his visa 'cause he has travelled back and forth for more than 20 years," she told the paper.


Eek-A-Mouse became popular in the 1970s. He is known for songs like Do You Remember, Virgin Girl and Wa-Do-Dem.

Volcanic ash-related flight cancellations in Europe forced Jamaican reggae star Eek-A-Mouse to miss his scheduled trial in Dare County this week on rape and kidnapping charges, but that didn't stop a warrant being issued for his arrest.
The musician, whose real name is Ripton Joseph Hylton, was in Amsterdam and could not fly to the United States, said Phillip Hayes, his Kitty Hawk attorney.
Superior Court Judge Jerry Tillett issued an order Monday for Hylton's arrest for failure to appear at the designated time.
"It was difficult for me to understand why the judge thought this was willful," Hayes said after his motion to continue the case for 60 days was denied.
Hylton, 52, was charged in August 2008 with first-degree kidnapping, second-degree rape and possession of cocaine, all felonies, stemming from an incident in Kill Devil Hills.
Police reported that a 23-year-old woman said she was held against her will by the performer at an Outer Banks motel. Hylton denies the charges.
Hayes said the U.S. State Department had recently agreed to re-issue Hylton's visa, which had been unexpectedly revoked about a week before. Meanwhile, the singer's scheduled flight from Heathrow Airport in London to Raleigh-Durham was canceled and most air traffic in Europe was suspended.
The case will not be rescheduled until Hylton is served with the arrest warrant, Hayes said.

Dancehall Reggae pioneer, Eek-a-mouse A.K.A Ripton Hylton has been released on a reduced bail of 17,000 dollars, after being accused of rape and drug possession in Dare County, North Carolina.

Reports out of Kill Devil Hills, where Eek-a-mouse performed last Friday, is that the Artist was targeted by the small town police after allegations of raping a white female surfaced early the following Saturday.

The female in question had been seen in the presence of the reggae star moments before his Friday night performance and was in his room when the raid was conducted on Saturday night.

Kill Devil Hills police conducted a raid on Saturday night after obtaining a search warrant, once the “rape” allegations surfaced. They raided the Reggae star’s room and discovered a small amount of cocaine in the process, and Eek-a-mouse was immediately taken into custody , charged with drug possesion, kidnapping, rape and held at the Dare County Detention Center on Sunday, before obtaining legal counsel on Monday.

Initial bail was set for 50,000 dollars secured, but was reduced once it was discovered by counsel that the female in question, was also an informant for the police.

Eek-a-mouse who has been known for his propensity to party, and passionate respect for women will continue his scheduled US tour in Arizona this weekend.

his lawyer should have shown up for the court date even if the judge refused to re-schedule the date, but he probably just faxed over the request in writing to the court attorney and then the Judge get mad and issue warrant. cause nobody nuh show up
