NO, there is smoke damage all over. Have you ever seen it for real? I have. I went there on pilgrimage. The gold is darkened, the colors of the garments and the background are darkened - it's all darkened, overall.

As to whether or not the artist intended it to represent an African... none of us today will ever know what was in his mind. And he left no specific statement either in writing nor in tradition even. All that is said about it, in general, is that it doesn't have African features... but if you can provide or point to pictures of Africans with the same features, then I personally would say that what is traditionally said about that must be wrong. After all, I tend to believe my eyes over someone else's blind statements.

Y would an artist paint a picture of a saint make it black and not mean it to be black ?????Was there a shortage of white paint ???? IMO which has equal weight to urs the colour was deliberate to show otherness. And to reflect local traditions... As this one came out of an area of europe during the time of Islamic - christianity clash and retreat... giving the goddess the features of a "moor" as she would have been described may reflect alot of things. Oh, franksterr!! That vid was sooo beautiful! I think I want to view it later when I pray my daily rosary later... it's far better than viewing just one icon while praying... it's so inspirational with it's incredible beauty! <--- THAT is the entire reason for such icons. We don't pray TO the icons (or statues or paintings, etc); we look at them and use our [God-given] sense of sight as inspiration while we pray. Such lovely images of the faces of Our Lady!!

As to what I personally think the Blessed Mother looked like, physically???
I think Mother Mary was dark skinned, all right. She was a Jew, semitic! She had to have been at least as dark as Mr Witchy in the summertime, if not darker... and Mr Witchy is always mistaken for a biracial Puerto Rican/African-American in the summertime, without fail! He is a fairly dark-olive complected man. I, on the other hand, am always pegged for a biracial Native American-White or as an Amerasian. I am neither. I am pure Russian, and purely white. Yet every "Indian" Nation here insists that I must be part Cherokee and/or part Navajo. The Cherokee themselves swear that I have Cherokee blood in me somewhere. (Been there, know a number of Cherokee who live on and off the Reservation, and am known there... but am not Cherokee, despite their firm insistence. lol) I only wish; I should be so lucky.. I could use some of the breaks that Cherokee qualify for. But I'm have no Cherokee in me, nor Navajo, nor any other Native American, nor Asian, blood. shrug OK, I admit that when my hair is done in two braids, when I put on certain clothing, and stand next to Cherokee women - you can't find me in the crowd. I blend right in. No one can find "the white woman in the group". The physical resemblance is uncanny... but it proves nothing. Just as Chinese insist that I have Chinese blood when they meet me. Uh... no. Not at all. Not one single drop of Chinese in me, sorry 'bout that. Not! All Asians tell me that I have something about the fold of my eye lids that means I have Asian genes. I have heard this from Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Cambodians, Vietnamese, Burmese, and Filipinos. I keep telling everyone: Russian, 100% Russian. No one believes me. sigh

I think that the Blessed Mother was dark skinned, possibly as dark as an Ethiopian... but no darker than that. Not so dark as many of the southern African peoples. I think that Our Lady probably had a hooked nose - not a long straight one... but that is something we shall never know.
I know that Mother Mary had dark brown (or black) hair and eyes: None of that blue-eyed golden-blonde-haired sh*t. That's bunk!
When I ultimately get to Heaven and finally see my spiritual Mother, I will know what Mary looks like. Until then... shrug... we (each of us) shall not know for sure.
