Anyway, great speech by Dr. Carson. Find this speech and watch it if you can. I saw it last night on the news, and the only thing I can say is...WOW! what a speaker.

It was a great speech and Dr Carson is a fine speaker. However I never saw Obama squirm. He was listening intently and stood up to applaud at the end. Mrs Obama also applauded during the speech. Dr Carson while a brilliant surgeon also appears to be a young earth creationist and anti evolution. I recall a debate with him and Richard Dawkins and Carson tried to explain his reasons for not believing in evolution and I was shocked at the reasons he put forward - the kind of reasoning you would expect to hear from someone who had read little or nothing on evolution. Which brings me to the point I want to make. Because someone is an expert and brilliant in one area does not mean that the person is brilliant or an expert in areas outside of that domain. With that said I thought the speech was inspiring and there was much in it to agree with.

I too did not see the president look uncomfortable. The doctor has some different views than that of the president, namely taxation and health care, but I think the president can handle the fact that not everyone agrees with his stance on all issues.

Oh I'm quite sure that Dr. Carson has read much more about evolution than many, if not most, people. He is, however, also a devout Seventh Day Adventist.

"By believing we are the product of random acts, we eliminate morality and the basis of ethical behavior. For if there is no such thing as moral authority, you can do anything you want. You make everything relative, and there's no reason for any of our higher values".

Dr. Carson's employment of a priori judgements about our existence has precedent in the works of Kant, Descartes and a number of other philosophers. Faith in the existence of a Creator would be an example of that. Everything else that he has to say on the subject of evolution is informed by that and not from any books he may or may not have read about evolution.

Carson's "issues" with evolution appear to be heavily skewed by his thinking that a belief in evolution and a belief in a creator are mutually exclusive. But this is simply not true. As one example Francis Collins is director of the NIH, leader of the human genome project, a Christian and also a believer and advocate for the theory of evolution. And when Carson asks "And why did evolution divert in so many directions--birds, fish, elephants, apes, humans--if there is some force evolving to the maximum?" - it demonstrates that he is almost completely ignorant of basic evolutionary theory.

Francis Collins is a proponent of "Theistic Evolution". Theistic Evolution is an attempt to find a middle ground between Creationism and Evolution. It is a point of view, not a body of testable knowledge. He is no different than Carson........in that regard.

Carson rejects macro evolution. He says he does not believe it is possible for one species to give rise to another though adaptation within species is possible. Collins accepts evolutionary theory but believes that God is in there somewhere and the source of the rules that guide evolution. I'd say the two are worlds apart.

That proposal is neither testable nor observable and uses language that has no universally agreed upon definition. Dr. Collin's point of view therefore is no different in it's essence than is Prof. Carson's. There is no light between them in that regard.

The basic issue here is whether religion can enable one to understand observable events around us using the scientific method and whether science can answer first cause questions or questions about morality. Dr.Collin's point of view and Dr. Carson's beliefs illustrates that dilemma perfectly. Stephen Jay Gould (among others) describes the situation this way:

"The magisterium of science covers the empirical realm: what the Universe is made of (fact) and why does it work in this way (theory). The magisterium of religion extends over questions of ultimate meaning and moral value. These two magisteria do not overlap, nor do they encompass all inquiry”

I think that is a most reasonable position.

Well...I was raised Catholic and had the misfortune to attend Catholic school from 1st grade to an all male Catholic high school until grade 10, and than I rebelled and told them their message was full of sh*t...and anyway I wanted to get my hands on some girls.

Looking back at the treatment of children attending Catholic grade school, when I attended, would amount to child abuse by todays standards...and all religions, through out history have been responsible for more death and misery than most governments. So, that said, I reject man's perverted interpretation of Religion and God, and I'm sure if a merciful creator exist he would do exactly the same.

...and as the song goes, "say there ain't no heaven, and I pray there ain't no hell"...and also, "there ain't no atheist in fox holes", if you get my point.

But getting back to Carson, you don't have to completely agree with something, to recognize excellence...
And in my opinion, Obama looked uncomfortable at times during Dr. Carsons speech.
