(CNN) -- Passengers on a Carnival cruise ship drifting in the Gulf of Mexico aren't getting the vacation they expected -- sleeping on its decks, making do with a few working toilets, and doing what they can to get food -- all due to a weekend engine fire left the vessel dead in the water.
The Carnival Triumph was about 150 miles off the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, heading back Sunday morning to Galveston, Texas -- where it had departed Thursday on a four-day trip -- when a fire broke out in an engine room, according to Carnival Cruise Lines.
The ship's automatic fire extinguishing system kicked in and soon contained the flames, and no injuries were reported, Carnival reported.
Yet this fire left the ship -- and its 3,143 passengers and 1,086 crew members -- adrift without propulsion, the cruise line said, halting its trip back to port.

CNN has non stop coverage of this story and I have to laugh. The way they are talking is that these passengers have been through a war, hurricane and tornado combined.

Seriously, they have been on a stranded cruise ship for three days, an ordeal to be sure but not overly newsworthy by any means. Most passengers have loved ones, hot showers and hot meals waiting for them when they dock in a few hours.

Why all the news coverage?

I'm beginning to wonder if the owners of CNN also own part of a competitors cruise ship line.

It was far too dangerous. In fact, it was too dangerous to even use the lifeboats and rescue that way because (1) use of life boats is always quite dangerous and is always only a last-ditch effort to save lives, and (2) just a few weeks ago another cruise line had a mishap when using their life boats, and some of their crew members were injured... imagine if the Triumph attempted to use its life boats and passengers had been injured! No. This was not a life-or-death situation and, therefore, did not merit taking such a risk to the passengers.

I don't understand unnu. Haven't any of unnu ever been on a cruise liner?! These are the first things you learn as soon as unnu board, at Muster! Those of us who've cruised more than once always get a kick of watching first-timers screw up at muster!
~ Immediately after Crew Member ammounces: "Do NOT inflate your life jackets! Just wear them... put them on... You must wear it, but DO NOT inflate it!" Some dummy pulls the cord. PFFFFFFFFT And another dummy right next to him/her does the same thing. PFFFFFFFFFFTT And soon there's no room for anyone to breathe (we are all already packed in together like sardines - literally!) because a few dummies have done exactly what they were instructed NOT TO DO. A last dummy does it again. PFFFFFFFFFFFT
~ At Muster, they take Roll Call. Muster is mandatory. you must attend. They will take Roll Call and you had better be present when they call your name and your cabin number out loud. Somebody is always not present, believing that the rules are for everyone but them. And we all must wait at the Emergency Stations while the crew must go and hunt the @hole down and drag them to their proper Muster station... and they must walk the Walk of Shame while everyone gives them dirty looks for holding the entire ship up, and often people will cuss these jerks out roundly, too. We all snicker.
~ Some people show up at Muster already too drunk to stand... or walk... or know their own names at Roll Call. So, after the crew has gone and hunted these drunks down, and they are not apparently aboard, the crew return to the Muster stations, and begin to question each individual passenger at each Muster Station as to his or her name and cabin number - and makes them produce their passport. Once the drunk(s) is/are discovered, the rest of us snigger and murmur about how he/she/they are do damn drunk the he/she/they don't even know who they are. Sadly, these people are too far drunk to feel any shame.
~ Some newbies arrive at Muster with huge beers or other alcoholic drinks in hand... which are strictly forbidden. NO alcohol at Muster. The grew makes you dump your drink out in a large garbage can. Some drunks toss it back before the crew can stop them. The crew want you to pay attention and know what you should do in case of a real honest-to-God life-or-death emergency in which you must evacuate the ship and get into a lifeboat. For God's sake! (Done correctly and without all the nonsense, Muster would only take about 12 minutes... but it never goes that way; it always takes closer to 45 minutes because of all the dummies and drunks aboard. A mere 12 minutes out of your entire cruise to know what to do if you need to get into a life boat?! And you can't manage to spare that?? MY opinion: You don't deserve a place in a life boat, then! CHO!!)
~ Some idiot always manages to leave their child in another part of the ship when they hurry off to the Emergency Station during the Muster Drill. For crying out loud! If you can't remember your child during a DRILL that you know for fact is only a drill, how are you gonna remember him/her during a real life-or-death emergency?! So... you're just gonna rush off to the life boat and jump on in and leave your kid behind??? Are you kidding??? You shoulda never reproduced in the first place, OMG! We snicker. Then we say a quick prayer for the poor kid, that s/he should be able to grow up decently anyway, even without decent parenting. And we try to mark what cabin the poor kid is in... and hope to God that we can remember to check on that kid if there really IS a real emergency... maybe we can grab him or her and help him or her to the proper Emergency Station with us. (coz if that kid is at our Station, then that kid is in a cabin near ours) And we shake our heads sadly.
~ And some moron always lets his or her pickney blow on the damn emergency whistle - splitting our darn ear drums in the small enclosed space, as we're all packed in like freakin' sardines in a small tin can - ignoring all of us yelling at said stupid parent to STOP THE CHILD, FOR GOD'S SAKE... until a crew member finally has had it and stops the child forcibly. (as in, takes away that child's life vest for a few minutes)

Yep. Muster is a never-to-be-forgotten start to each and every cruise. HOW could you possibly forget what you've learned at Muster?! They explain to you the dangers of lowering the life boats, of getting into the life boats, of remaining inside the life boats (especially in choppy waters), of safely getting rescue attention from inside the life boats, etc. You can't forget this. Believe me!

And every single passenger must attend Muster on every single cruise, no matter how often they've cruised (even on the exact same ship). Muster is mandatory.

No one who has ever cruised would ever ask why Carnival didn't send another ship to perform a ship-to-ship or a life boat rescue. Not even an air lift rescue - how could anyone possibly air lift almost 4,000 passengers? Nope. The question itself is ridiculous. No one was in danger of their life, therefore, it would have been incredibly dangerous (not to mention legally stupid) to risk lives. OK, so they were uncomfortable. OK, so they lived for a few days in deplorable and disgusting conditions. But they survived - something any other form of rescue might have made impossible.

Such an obvious dunce clearly wasn't here (NYC area) ... nor in the D.C. or the PA locations ... at the time of 9/11, or she'd never have said it. Anyone who was actually here (or in D.C. or PA) knows her for either a fool and/or a liar - or both.

She wasn't forced to jump from the biggest hi-rise in NYC to avoid flames, in a vain attempt to survive. She didn't try to claw her way out of a heavily-smoke-laden underground tunnel or subway station and collapsing hi-rise building in a vain attempt to try to reach topside to try to survive. She didn't even run from flames, choking on thick smoke, wondering what the hell had happened, how had the world suddenly turned upside down, what was going on. She didn't even
have to climb down more than a hundred flights of stairs in the dark, terrified, fearful for her very life, trying to make it out of the building alive, wondering if she was gonna make it out alive. She didn't even choke on dust while she tried to outrun a falling building. Hell, she didn't even have to run, in blind terror, all the way from Ground Zero to the goddamn Brooklyn Bridge, and then keep on running - still in blind terror - all the way across the damn bridge, still fearful that she wasn't gonna get out of NYC alive. Nor did she have to walk the hell out of New York City, across the effing George Washington Bridge, walking all night long, unable to use the cell grid to notify her spouse or family that she was alright and still alive... and keep on walking from Fort Lee - all the way back to freakin' Orange!

My neighbors did just that ^ on that day - they were at the Twin Towers and ran all the way to and across the Brooklyn Bridge, into Brooklyn, had to walk across the length of Brooklyn up to the George Washington Bridge in hopes of getting back across to New Jersey - couldn't get across to Jersey and had to walk across the GWB... and once back in Jersey, couldn't get a ride back down here to Orange and had to walk (or hitchhike) a ride from Ft Lee down here to Orange! And for those 30 or so hours, NO ONE (of their loved ones) knew where they were, because the cell grid had collapsed and they couldn't get a phone call in to home. These people had to walk approx. 60 miles under horrifying conditions, in what amounts to shell-shock, in 24-30 hours, with little help from anyone.

Yet this stupid B* has the unmitigated GALL to compare her luxury cruise vacation (gone wrong, yet still on a freakin' luxury cruise ship, nonetheless, with no one trying to KILL her) with what these people suffered during the terrorist attack of 9/11! Unfreakinbelievable!!
