That's ^ a lie. The word "unless" does not appear in the text of the 13th Amendment.

The full text of he 13th Amendment is this:
"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."
And the "exception as punishment for crime" refers to chain gang, or other types, of enforced prisoner labor. Not slavery.
And in the states where such labor is utilized by law, it is evenly enforced across the board in their prisons - regardless of race or color; they do not differentiate between the race or color of some prisoners over others. And not all such prisoner labor is hard labor, either. I offer the example of Kentucky, which I know about intimately, since Lou worked for a company that hired the Kentucky lifer prisoners to work remotely on their system, and I know all of the details of that particular prison labor system. How hard is the "labor" of scanning coupons with a hand-held bar code scanner and a computer?! Come please!

I offer the example of Kentucky, which I know about intimately, since Lou worked for a company that hired the Kentucky lifer prisoners to work remotely on their system, and I know all of the details of that particular prison labor system. Furthermore, in the Kentucky prison system, it's not even BY ANY DEFINITION "slavery", even though it IS "enforced work", because the prisoners are PAID for their work. It's just part of their penal time for their crime.

In Kentucky, every prisoner works. It is mandatory. Any prisoner who does not work is punished. But, every prisoner is paid for his/her work. (Yes, the pay is nominal, but it is pay.)
From the best jobs to the least desirable:
Coupon scanning / counting
Making the furniture used in all of the State's buildings and prisons
Working in the gardens
Working in the kitchen
Working in the cleaning details
Working in the laundry

Only the lifers get the chance to work with the coupons. And if an individual screws up too many times (or one really big time), he's fired and must go back to whatever other less desirable job he came from. They take great care to try to learn how to work here well. It's the plum job! They open up the boxes of coupons, sort them, count them, scan them with the hand-held scanner, work with the software the Mr Witchy wrote and maintained over the course of almost 30 years before parting company with this coupon clearinghouse in northwestern NJ a few years ago, and re-box the coupons to send back to said clearinghouse.

Mr Witchy has gone out to the Kentucky prison a few times to teach the prisoners. I was out there twice, myself, to teach them. Mr Witchy always stayed right there in the prison (not in a cell - lol, there are apartments within the prison). I, however, was not put up in the women's prison... there was concern about my safety there. Apparently the female prisoners are not to be trusted as the male prisoners are. Hmm. Interestingly, even the male lifer prisoners begged their guards to tell their boss NOT to let the state place me in the women's prison to teach; they said that those B*es would hurt me and they were worried for my welfare! The state sent me over to the women's prison - and sure enough, on the first day, three hours into my visit, one of the female prisoners attacked me and I needed 34 stitches in my face and neck and my right hand and wrist, which I received from the prison doctor. And so, that's how the male prisoners got the coupon job to themselves and the women prisoners never got to share in it. You should have SEEN the degree of upset displayed by the male life prisoners when I got back to the men's prison! You'd've thought I was their wife, not Mr Witchy's! OMG! The State of Kentucky paid for all of my medical bills and then some more...
