Let's set sail... on the TITANIC II !!! Wait, what???

The ticket price for a first class premium cabin aboard the maiden voyage of the Titanic II - which will take the exact same route as the original Titanic did on it's fateful trip in 1912 - is $1,000,000 (that's a $million!)!!
It's going to be "a re-enactment of the original voyage".* (minus the whole 'iceberg accident-ship sinking-lost lives / thing', presumably?)

Clive Palmer actually thinks this a good idea, believes he's gonna make money on this.

I don't know which is the madder idea: That people will pay the monetary equivalent of ten (10) times the original price of the voyage ticket or that people will line up to go on a re-enactment voyage of the freakin' Titanic voyage?!!
I mean... iceberg collision accident... tears ship badly... captain & crew eff up just about every decision and act of the evening... not enough lifeboats for everyone aboard... cowardly crew members jump into lifeboats leaving passengers aboard & and crew members permit cowardly men passengers to jump into lifeboats leaving women & children passengers aboard... icy waters kill people not lucky enough to get into a lifeboat (since there weren't enough lifeboats)... rescue didn't come in time to save sooooo many lives... Yeah - sounds like a really fabulous cruise to be on! A Night to Remember ... err... Re-enact, indeed!

If money were no obstacle... if you were given free passage in a first class cabin... would unnu sail on the Titanic II's maiden re-enactment voyage?

I think enough time has passed (more that 100 years) for such a voyage to set sail and not be in bad taste.

If I had a $1,000,000 I would spend it on a few thousand things before I would consider being a passenger on Titanic 2 but I do not disparage those that want to experience what it was like to cross the Atlantic in the same sort of opulence that the Astors enjoyed circa 1912.

I think it would be quite and extraordinary experience when they reach the spot where the original Titanic sank.

So is the ship just going to go back and forth across the Atlantic retracing the steps of the original Titanic's maiden voyage? Will it continue on to New York or will it just turn around at the wreck and return home to Europe?

if they want to remain true to form, perhaps they will manufacture a big iceberg and sink it - with an inadequate amount of lifeboats no less.

the titanic is iconic in its tragedy from documentaries i've seen. why go there? there were other ocean liners of the same type and era. why would anyone want to be so ghoulish?

Well, the Mad Aussie (my pet name for him - dwl) says that his new Titanic II is going to "re-enact the original voyage" (see the article I hotlinked to in my o.p.), but he also says that it is going to make the entire originally planned voyage to New York City. Since - a Sue points out below - it can't do both... shrug... dunno

There were plenty of other drop-dead gorgeuos cruise liners of that era that could "re-create the opulence that the Astors cruised in" - to use Milo's words - that could have been reproduced without being so goddamn ghoulish! OMG!!
No, Milo, it is NOT "long enough to be 'not in bad taste' "! It's still in bad taste! It always will be in bad taste! Not to mention tempting fate, IMO!! Eh-eh.

When I want to cruise in opulence, I will continue to book my cruises - as I've always done - on Royal Caribbean ships, thank you very much!

Their best cabins are good enough for me (yep, been in their best on some ships, and in second- and third-best on others of their ships), and I love their staff! I've loved every cruise I've ever been on... all Royal Caribbean line cruises.
