Alot of this of the great and the good was known...

I typed in the village I live in Scotland and there is no one there.. I typed in the next village over and one person came up... Funny Monymusk a village near where I live had no names who got cash....But Monymusk is a plantation....

This is not complete because I came across other owners as I travel round Scotland...

I went and found two of the Plantations owners who were rewarded for my ancestors.... Found another owner who owned a property on which owned a Great, Great, great Grandfather who was a cartman on a coffee plantation... but that is not true as my oral history I am told on here has no validity without confirmation of the internet....

Look up Holland Plantation in ST Elizabeth and you find that owner was Gladstone.. related to r of the text on which alot of 19th Centurary US lawyers studied and the father of William Gladstone PM of the UK. I believe that Cameron the current PM ancestor is in there!

Fascinating. I put in two last names within my family that are only recorded for Jamaica and none of the other colonies (that word was hard to type!). I put in one other last name and it was popular in other Caribbean islands as well. So... there are some last names that are unique to Jamaica

Also, I think I need to collect some, um, inheritance

My Father's Father's family was from St Lucia..i see a few names there.

Wow...thanks for sharing this resource. I did a few searches on last names but did not come up with anything concrete. So many of us have the names "given" to us or from the mixed marriages of the past that is a challenge. I need to go back to the family tree to see names.

My old man told me of where his peoples were owned, and where they were not owned.... to the point why he made descions to close the circle.

My thing is this that the so called nationalist have never done any coherent research into the economics history of Jamaicans... I have a theory that the descendants of those who were field laborers fell to the bottom of the economic heap and in 1838 had no salable skills . and the nascent middle classes were those that had skills..ie masons, carpenters, wheel rrights, factors and preachers...As they had a salable skill they could get educated aquire property and education....the much maligned house slaves....

Nope....My Grandma never mention slavery. One both sides is seems as if our family started with Granny and Grampy. As a matter of fact my Paternal Grandma who raised us never even told us about her husband.
What I know is she was coal Black but she my dad's half sister is very light.

I thought oral history is common... It's rare that I'd come across a Jamaican who doesn't have some grasp on where their forebears originated in the country and I'm talking about great-great grand parents.

I typed in both parents paternal names and came up with the towns in JA we were told our great-great hailed on both side of the family tree. It yield no results for both of my parents maternal family names... the names are very uncommon.

It is true but there is the other side to consider.
Many Grandparents were too close to the struggle. A struggle they would rather forget and move past.
I see it on this Board as well in years past, not many folks (Those who did not and those who experienced it.), wanted to remember the details of the 70s.

Come to the 80s and 90s and again it was difficult to get past the noise to discuss Social and Political issues affecting Jamaica, except on the surface and usually dismissive of others personal experiences that do not jibe with the concocted picture. But talk about Slavery and Black struggle and you are a hero.

Maybe if we moved on from everything, face the future as blank slate sans historical/social/political baggage (somewhat as my paternal granny did), Jamaica would be a better place.
