ORMER Third World percussionist Irvin 'Carrot' Jarrett is tapping on the healing attributes of music. Now a naturopathic practitioner, Jarrett, along with marketing consultant Julia Vaz, held a Body and Soul Wellness charity fair at Wickie Wackie, Bull Bay, on Sunday.
The proceeds will be donated to the Spanish Town-based 3D Projects for disabled children. The event featured holistic therapy, music, art, and activities
"It was an incredible event and my way to give back to the society," Jarrett told the Jamaica Observer.
Jarrett, who left the band Third World in the 1980s, has been touching lives as a holistic health provider since the 1990s. He main his main focus is reiki. It uses a technique commonly called palm healing or hands on healing as a form of complementary therapy.
"This thing (reiki) is something that will help us to live a healthier lifestyle," Jarrett said. It involves ancient traditional principles, the power of touch and distance techniques to enhance healing.
This does not mean he has abandoned his musical calling. In fact, he combines music in the healing process.
"In reiki I use music. It's all about energy. It's all about frequency so the music is part of the healing process," the certified third-degree teacher explained. "I also use aroma therapy and oils."
Jarrett was quick to rebuff the perception that reiki is a form of devil worshipping.
"It is because they (detractors) don't understand it. Reiki is the same thing that Jesus Christ used," he said.
Jarrett — who is currently doing his naturopathic doctorate at The Trinity School of Natural Health in Indiana, United States — said his venture into holistic healthcare was as a result of his observation.
"I used to look at the faces of the audiences who used to come to the concerts and enjoyed the music. They walked away feeling good within hearts but in a couple of days that wears off. So I said to myself 'how can I touch them beyond that moment?'," he told the Jamaica Observer.
The former percussionist has since formed CREED Group Entertainment, a production entity designed as an umbrella framework for health and educational projects. CREED is the acronym for Consistent Rhythmic Energy Enticing Dance.
Jarrett was part of the classic line-up of the Third World and played on some of the band's hit songs including 96° in the Shade, Always Around and Now That We Found Love
