Every week in de european football leagues from england to france, to italy, germany amd might as well go over to russia as well, there are fans in the stans throwing things and chanting racist insults at black players.
In NA every once in a while (doesn't seem as often though) a banana or racial slur is hurled at a black hockey player.
Italy's best player an African was almost chanted outta de stadium a month or so ago. Few weeks ago a team walked off de field cause the crowd was so bad.

It depends dahjah. As you know I cut Europeans a bit more slack than North American Whites or those from the UK.

On the football field clearly there is a ton of racism. In terms of employment, educated Blacks face fewer barriers. European men are more open to dating Black women. So no perfection but overall I think the climate is better. People in North America just don't express their negative feelings towards Blacks as openly as there are laws here to prevent that.

Ray Lewis of the Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens is much loved in Baltimore. He owns the City.
Black NFL players are super stars in America...so, If your comparing European football fans and US football fans, than no, US football fans don't do those things...and anyway, hockey is a Canadian sport, so that bad behavior probably evolved in Canada...Hockey is an after thought in the US.

I guess I fit into the category of dem.

I had heard of some incidents in which Black players had been the target of insults in Europe. I thought these were isolated incidents. But then, I am not the athlete in the family. Funny my soccer and hockey mad son has never mentioned these incidents. When he comes to help with our move, I will casually weave this into the conversation.

Soccer I always saw as an egalitarian sport as men from so many different countries come together and play.....nicely I thought. The hockey, I discouraged as it was the last bastion of racism IMHO. My son has never reported receiving racial insults in either sport. The other players and the parents seemed to love him. Don't know if that changes at the professional level.

As I said, I go to Europe sometimes and I do perceived differences.

Example: Some of the very White women who go down to Jamaica and pick up Black guys off the beach return home and treat their Black female co-workers like dirt.

While men from some European countries e.g. Italy, Germany are more open to dating Black women, these are some of the same countries hurling insults at Black players. Some Black guys speak about being taunted and beaten up by Italian men yet I have never had a problem with Italians. I perceive them as different.

There is a disconnect. I do think that Black men and Black women need to compare notes on these things though.

Soccer Racism Prompts Walkout, and Outrage

ROME — Italians reacted forcefully Friday to a racist incident that led players with the powerful A.C. Milan club to abandon a soccer match this week, taking a strong stand in a country where racist episodes in sporting events are generally underplayed.

A prosecutor in Busto Arsizio, the Lombard town where the episode took place, said Friday that he would open a criminal investigation into charges of instigation to racial hatred, and the town’s mayor said he would sue the culprits, once they were identified. The head of the Italian Bishops’ Conference decried racism in soccer, and the owner of A.C. Milan, the former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, said his team would walk off the field in any future game, including international matches, blighted by racist chanting.
“These uncivil episodes, these catcalls and defamatory chants now occur with excessive frequency and offend soccer and all of sports,” Mr. Berlusconi said Friday.
An exhibition match between A. C. Milan and Pro Patria, a lower division club, was abruptly abandoned on Thursday after Kevin-Prince Boateng, a Ghanaian-German midfielder,responded to racist chants by kicking a ball into the stands where some Pro Patria supporters were howling like monkeys and then walked off the field, followed by his teammates.
“Shame that these things still happen,” Mr. Boateng wrote on Twitter after the game.
Three other Milan players, Urby Emanuelson, Sulley Muntari and M’Baye Niang, were also harassed with chants.
It was the first time that a soccer team had halted a game because of racism, a gesture that sent a strong signal that could have wide repercussions, some hoped. Typically, referees will temporarily stop games marred by racist chants to allow clubs and players to get rowdy fans under control.
“It was a courageous gesture,” on the part of players, “a small episode with an enormous value,” said Andrea Monti, editor in chief ofGazzetta dello Sport, the sports daily that on Friday dedicated six pages of interviews and commentary to the episode. Some commentators wondered whether the team would have left the field had it been a league game or part of an international championship.
“Certainly the fact that it was an exhibition game made it easier,” Mr. Monti said, “but the fact is that it happened and it is time that it did.”
Racism among soccer fans and players is hardly a new phenomenon, especially in Europe. The problem is acute in the East, in Russia, Ukraine and the Balkans, but it is a continuing issue in Britain and France, too. Fans try to upset opposing players, often African in origin, with racist chants, and some prominent players have also been accused of racism, making comments and gestures in the heat of a match.
“I don’t see this as only Eastern European, except by shade or degree. It’s ubiquitous in Europe,” said Andrei Markovits, a professor of German studies at the University of Michigan. “Somehow the soccer stadium has remained the last bastion of unmitigated maleness. You can behave badly and be proud of it, the way you can’t in virtually any other venue in Europe.”
In November, the police investigated a “monkey gesture” made by a Chelsea fan aimed at a Manchester United player, Danny Welbeck. A Liverpool fan was banned for four years after being found guilty of racial taunting against another Manchester United player, Patrice Evra. German fans have made Nazi salutes.
The former England captain John Terry was cleared by a court in July of charges of racist taunting, but was nevertheless banned for four matches and fined $350,000 after being found guilty of racially abusing a player for the Queen’s Park Rangers.
The various organizations governing soccer have blown hot and cold on the issue, condemning racism but also threatening to sanction players who interrupt or abandon matches because of racial taunting.
So far this season there have been 25 racist episodes in Italian soccer, said Mauro Valeri, a sociologist and an expert in racism in soccer, a frequency on par with last year, when fines totaling more than $685,000 were issued, he added. Italian news reports said that Pro Patria had been fined about $20,000 for racist chants over the past year.
Soccer authorities do not do enough to educate fans and soccer clubs about racism, Mr. Valeri said, and racist episodes often go unrecognized, even by the sporting press. “Boateng was jeered during an A. C. Milan-Internazionale derby in October, and no one said anything,” he said. “So it’s important that awareness about the problem remains high, but to be honest, I have my doubts that it will.”
Italian news media reported Friday that several Pro Patria fans involved in the racist chanting had been identified through video feeds of the game. Mr. Valeri said that singling out the culprits, instead of fining the clubs, as was done in the past, would send a strong message.
Mr. Boateng also called on the authorities to prosecute racists. “I am sad and angry about the fact that I have to be the one who takes this step,” he told CNN in an interview on Friday. “Like I have to be the one who walks off the field, when there are so many people like FIFA or whatever — they can do something against it, so they should wake up and do it. They should not tolerate it. If there is a little thing of racism, they should be out, they should be banned forever from the stadium.”

Inter Milan charged over Tottenham incidents



UEFA has charged Inter Milan over the racist behaviour of their fans during the Europa League match against Tottenham last week.Inter fans taunted Spurs striker Emmanuel Adebayor and other black players with monkey chants, and the abuse was reported to UEFA by the match delegate and anti-discrimination body FARE.
The Italian club has also been charged with insufficient organisation and throwing of missiles and/or fireworks.
The case will be dealt with on April 19.
UEFA said in a statement: "Proceedings [against Inter] have been opened on the following charges: racist behaviour of supporters, insufficient organisation, throwing of missiles and/or fireworks. The case will be dealt with on 19 April."
Inter look certain to escape with just a fine even if the charges are proved.
Piara Powar, executive director of European football's anti-discrimination body FARE, said it was the Italian club's first racism charge in Europe which under current UEFA rules means just a fine.
Inter have been sanctioned by the Italian FA this season - they were fined #43,000 for waving inflatable bananas and unfurling abusive banners aimed at Mario Balotelli and his team-mate Sulley Muntari in last month's Milan derby while the club also received a #12,900 fine after sections of their support sang racist chants about the former Manchester City striker during a game against Chievo.
Football Association chairman David Bernstein condemned the chants against Spurs and admitted the regularity of such abuse was worrying for the game.
He said last week: "I condemn the racist abuse that Tottenham Hotspur players suffered at last night's Europa League fixture in Milan.
"It is unacceptable and concerning that clubs in Europe have had to endure recurrences of abuse this season.
"I am sure UEFA will take appropriate action but it also reminds us of the need to work collectively across national and international football authorities to deal with this serious issue, as we are also doing in this country.
"This is a matter I will take up as a priority with the new FIFA anti-racism and discrimination task force when I meet its head Jeffrey Webb in the near future."

They are different sides of the same coin. Think of Europe as you would the States in America. There are some where you feel safer than others.

And trust me Tropi there are NOT more opportunities for Educated Blacks in the UK than the US. You can count on probably just one hand the Blacks in a position which holds ANY clout in England. Figet Europe! Although... I think it is Poland (?) that has an African Parliament member. That story ran in their newspapers for weeks!

Really? I am surprised. My impression based on visiting the UK and speaking with people who live in the UK is that there are more career opportunities for educated Blacks, more acting parts for Black actors with a wider variety of roles and let's not forget more marriage opportunities for Black women in the UK than in North America. Every Black woman I know who moves over there for a bit comes back married and you even see lickle short Asian men with blonde women in London.
