Priests should marry.

There is no double standard. The Bible is really clear but people choose not to obey it.

For those who missed it my main points were....

1. There is nothing in scripture that prohibits marriage by priests. I quoted:

1 Corinthians 7:9 ►

9But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

2. Skelley highlighted the verses in that chapter and we discussed the fact that Paul had suggested that in tough times, singleness would be easier.

3. I mentioned that we need to look at the full context of the passage. Singleness and marriage are both gifts and not everyone had the gift of singleness. Here it is:

Teaching on Marriage

1Now concerning the things about which you wrote, it is good for a man not to touch a woman.2But because of immoralities, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband.3The husband must fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband.4The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husbanddoes; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wifedoes.5Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.6But this I say by way of concession, not of command.7Yet I wish that all men were even as I myself am. However, each man has his own gift from God, one in this manner, and another in that.

8But I say to the unmarried and to widows that it is good for them if they remain even as I.9But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

4. Other points I stressed were that we need to remember that God invented sex and gave a a wonderful gift. It's the most incredible and most intimate experience that two people can share. It is the closest level at which 2 people can be connected. God thinks that sex is so meaningful that he used the union of man and woman in marriage as a picture to illustrate the bond between Christ and the church.

5. We as human beings have abused the gift. We are seeing the results even in the church. I compared this someone receiving a gift of beautiful china and crystal and then dragging it through a cesspool.

5. Skelley mentioned the abuse of boys by priests as an example and I agreed. Scripture does not prohibit marriage and by imposing this restriction that is in no way Biblical, this perverted behaviour has emerged. We discussed the fact that the first pope according to Catholic tradition (Peter) was married. Prohibition against marriage by priests was not based on Scripture but on the concern to protect the church from claims for ownership of church property by the offspring of priests.

6. Skelley asked me about my views on home sexuality. I indicated that Scripture was very clear that it falls short of God's ideal of a committed relationship between and a woman. God brought Adam and Eve together in that first marriage...not Adam and Steve and this is the model we should follow.

I didn't realize we covered so much.
