JPS says 10 per cent increase in electricity bills this month

The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) says customers will see a 10 per cent increase in their light bills this month.
According to the JPS, this is because of high fuel costs and the devaluation of the Jamaican dollar.
The JPS says the Fuel & IPP Charge on bills for this month is $26.54 per kilowatt-hour, compared with J$23.03 on their February bills.
Additionally, the JPS says the billing exchang applied to bills will move to $97.11 this month from $94.14 in February.
This means a residential customer for example who consistently uses 200 kWh of electricity per month, will see an increase of just over $760 on his bill.
As a result, the customer's March bill will be about $7,918 compared to his February bill of $7,154.
The JPS says more than 60 cents of every dollar it collects goes to Petrojam for fuel.
The JPS is encouraging customers to conserve on electricity.
