Toilet paper recall - Bureau of Standards

The Bureau of Standard Jamaica (BSJ) has confirmed it has had to pull toilet paper from shop shelves and seize items from at least one local warehouse.
This was done when a local gynecologist reported that patients were being infected by some brands of toilet paper. Jamaica Customs also complained to the Bureau that some clients had voiced concern about the products.
Stemming from this the BSJ was forced to detain shipments of the product. However the brand of toilet paper has not been disclosed.
“We have tested 28 brands so far and we have found four brands with unacceptable levels of micro-organisms. We are still conducting investigations, we have sent samples to a lab overseas because we are doing some comparative analysis , so we would not want to release the names of those brands until we have conducted the necessary due diligence” said Orine Henry Blair, the BSJ’s Director of Standards.
She was speaking on Friday at the weekly RJR Group News Forum.

Health Ministry investigates toilet paper controversy

The Ministry of Health has launched an investigation into the disturbing issue surrounding the sale of contaminated toilet paper.
The Health Ministry broke its silence on Tuesday afternoon when Michael Coombs – the Chief Medical Officer said his office is also concerned that the matter was only brought to light after a Gynecologist found that patients were being repeatedly infected.
While the names of the four brands of toilet paper have not been released, RJR news has learnt that one brand is imported from within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
Last week the Bureau of Standards said it was waiting for conclusive scientific tests to be done overseas, before revealing the brand of contaminated toilet paper.
However, Professor Winston Davidson – the Chairman of the Bureau of Standards now says the names may not be released due to legal concerns.

He argues that the Bureau never asked the manufacturers of toilet paper to meet microbiological standards - similar to what is required for food imports.

Concerning reports that some supermarkets still had contaminated toilet paper on their shelves – Davidson admitted that this was true.

However, the Ministry of Health has stepped in and revealed that it will be removing the affected toilet paper brands from the public domain.

Meanwhile, the council of the Bureau of Standards has decided to incorporate standards for non-food items, such toilet paper.
“We could not test before because we had a backlog of about 850 food testing before and now that we greater capacity and we have a more efficient laboratory it is now possible for Jamaica to strive for best practice,” said Davidson.

Health ministry to immediately pull inferior tissues

The Ministry of Health says it will be immediately removing several brands of inferior tissues from the market to reduce possible public health risks.

In a release a short while ago, the health ministry did not name the inferior brands.

However it said reports indicate that there is high bacterial load on samples of at least four brands.

In the meantime, the health ministry says it has launched its own investigation into the matter.

“We take even more interest in this matter as indications are that the Bureau of Standards Jamaica’s testing of several brands was prompted by reports of gynaecological incidents,” said a health ministry spokesperson.

The ministry says contact has already been made with the BSJ.

It also says it is probing the gynaecological incidents.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has released a list of 24 brands which have passed the BSJ’s microbiological testing.
